Klooga ( German Lodensee or Lonsee ) is a large village ( alevik ) in the Estonian district of Harju . It has 969 inhabitants (January 1, 2000). Klooga belongs administratively to the rural community Lääne-Harju (until 2017 rural community Keila ).

Klooga is located on the north bank of the lake of the same name. The lake is 1.85 km² and up to 3.66 m deep. It feeds the Vasalemma River .

An electrified rail link runs from Klooga to Tallinn , Paldiski and the Baltic seaside resort of Kloogaranna.

Klooga mansion

The German Baltic mansion of Klooga is particularly famous . It was built in the baroque style in the first half of the 18th century . In 1794 the two-storey building was extended and rebuilt. Today only ruins remain. Under the name Lodijärve loss, the mansion is the scene of the well-known Estonian story Tasuja ("The Avenger") by Eduard Bornhöhe .

Second World War

The German occupation forces established the Klooga concentration camp near the town in September 1943 . The labor camp, a satellite camp of the Vaivara concentration camp , housed up to 3,000 prisoners. On September 19, 1944, the SS murdered around 2,500 of them before the Red Army marched into the village.
