Eduard Bornhöhe

Eduard Bornhöhe (* 5 February . Jul / 17th February  1862 greg. On the farm Kullaaru, community Rakvere , Lääne-Viru County , Estonia ; † 17th November 1923 in Tallinn ) was one of the most successful Estonian writer of the 19th century.

Life

Eduard Bornhöhe (real name Eduard Brunberg ) led an unsteady life that constantly presented him with new professional challenges. He attended elementary school from 1872 to 1874 and the district school in Tallinn from 1874 to 1877. After that he was a draftsman for a surveyor in Saint Petersburg and an apprentice in a shop for a short time . In 1878/79 he worked for a railway office in Kaunas , then assistant schoolmaster at the parish school in Põltsamaa and worked for a German-language newspaper in Tallinn.

From 1881 he worked as a teacher in Stavropol and Tbilisi . Among other things, he undertook extensive trips to Asia Minor . Back in Estonia he became a tutor in the manor house of Matsalu and a theater critic for the German-language newspaper Revaler Beobachter . In 1886/87 he was a voice and singing teacher at the seminary in Kuuda ( Lääne district ) and then again tutor in Matsalu.

In 1889 he enrolled at the Philosophical Faculty of the University of Tartu , but gave up his studies that same year. He made his way as a tutor, writer and cartoonist. In 1893 he became a translator at the Tallinn District Court. From 1907 to 1917 he was the presiding magistrate in Jõhvi . From 1919 he worked as a justice of the peace in Tallinn.

Literary work

Eduard Bornhöhe's novels are very much concerned with historical adventures. They are shaped by romance . Bornhöhe is considered to be the founder of the Estonian historical novel. Recurring themes are the uprising of the Estonians against the Knights of the Order on St. George's Night on April 23, 1343 and scenes from the Livonian War .

In 1893 the tsarist censorship severely restricted Eduard Bornhöhe's work. He then withdrew almost completely from the life of a writer.
