Ieva Ilves (born Kupce; born September 13, 1977 in Riga ) is a top Latvian civil servant. She has been the wife of the former Estonian President Toomas Hendrik Ilves since January 2016 and was therefore First Lady of the Republic of Estonia .

Career

Ieva Kupce grew up in Limbaži and Salacgriva . She graduated from the University of Latvia in Riga. She received her master's degree from Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore .

Since 1997 she has worked for the Latvian government in various positions in foreign and defense policy. In 2010/2011 she was political advisor to the EU Special Representative for the South Caucasus, based in Baku . Ieva Ilves then worked in the Latvian Ministry of Defense. There she heads the coordination unit for cyber security policy.

In the 2019 European elections in Latvia , she stood as a candidate for the liberal electoral alliance Attīstībai / Par! on, but missed entry into parliament. She is currently working as a consultant for Latvia's President Egils Levits in the field of information and digital policy.

Private life

Ieva Ilves was married to the diplomat Ivars Pundurs (* 1966), who is currently the Latvian ambassador to Greece. Together with him, she has a son, Ralfs Jāni (* 2002), and a daughter, Isabella (* 2014) from a relationship during their time in Baku.

At the beginning of December 2015, the press spokesman for the Estonian President announced Ieva Kupce's engagement to Toomas Hendrik Ilves. The couple married on January 2, 2016 in Halliste, southern Estonia . Their son Hans Hendrik Ilves was born on November 28, 2016.
