Last year's individual winner, Robin Söderling , was unable to defend his title due to injury. In this year's final, Roger Federer won over Jo-Wilfried Tsonga in two sets . Federer, who celebrated his 800th victory at ATP level in the quarter-finals against Juan Mónaco , did not give up a set during the entire tournament; this was previously only achieved by Amos Mansdorf (1988), Stefan Edberg (1990) and Thomas Enqvist (1996). For Federer this was the first triumph in Paris, but already the 18th Masters title of his career. Tsonga, on the other hand, was unable to add another to his only Masters title to date, which he had won exactly three years earlier at this point.
Mahesh Bhupathi and Max Mirny won the doubles title last year, but this time they both competed with other partners. Bhupathi was eliminated in the second round, while Mirny was able to reach the semi-finals. In this year's final won Rohan Bopanna and Aisam-ul-Haq Qureshi against a wildcard launched Julien Benneteau and Nicolas Mahut . This was the first Masters title of their career for both players and the third joint title this season.
The field of participants in the individual competition consisted of 48 players, that of the doubles competition consisted of 24 pairs. The 16 top seeded players in singles and the eight top seeded pairings in doubles each received a bye into the second round. The total prize money was 2,227,500 euros; the total financial liabilities were 2,750,000 euros.
The qualification took place from November 5th to 6th, 2011. Four qualifying places were played, which entitle them to participate in the main draw of the tournament. There was also a lucky loser.
The following prize money and world ranking points were paid out or credited for reaching the respective round. Players who moved into the main draw via qualification received the specified qualification points in addition to those for reaching the respective round.
