Kelly Graeme Evernden (born September 21, 1962 , in Gisborne ) is a retired New Zealand tennis player .

Life

Evernden graduated from the University of Arkansas and was voted one of the best All-American picks in 1984 . The following year he became a professional tennis player and was in the final of the ATP tournaments in Brisbane , where he was defeated by Paul Annacone , and in Sydney , where he failed to Henri Leconte . In 1986 he won his first double title in Cologne alongside Chip Hooper . The following year was the most successful of his career. He was able to win two single titles and a double title. In total, he won three singles and five doubles titles in the course of his career. He reached his highest ranking in the tennis world rankings in 1989 with position 31 in singles, and in 1988 with position 19 in doubles.

His best result in a Grand Slam tournament was in 1987 with the quarter-finals of the Australian Open . In the doubles competition he was in the quarterfinals of the Australian Open, Wimbledon and the US Open .

Evernden played 34 singles and 20 doubles games for the New Zealand Davis Cup team between 1985 and 1994 . His greatest success with the team was reaching the quarter-finals of the world group in 1990 against Australia . He won his singles against John Fitzgerald , but lost to Wally Masur and in doubles at David Lewis's side against Darren Cahill and Mark Kratzmann . At the 1988 Summer Olympics , he competed in singles and doubles for New Zealand. After a win over Goran Ivanišević , he was eliminated in the second round against Amos Mansdorf . Together with Bruce Derlin he reached the quarter-finals, but was eliminated there against Stefan Edberg and Anders Järryd from Sweden. In 1990 he took part in the Hopman Cup with Belinda Cordwell , they lost in the first round against the Austrians Barbara Paulus and Thomas Muster .
