The Wellington ATP tournament (officially the BP National Championships ) is a former men's tennis tournament that was held in the New Zealand capital from 1988 to 1992 . The game was played on outdoor hard courts. The competition was held in the first week of January and was considered a good preparation for the Australian Open , as it was played on the same surface . The tournament last ran as part of the ATP World Series , the predecessor of the ATP World Tour 250 . In the 1993 season the BP National Championships were replaced by the tournament in Doha in the tour calendar of the ATP Tour . The competition was held as a challenger event for three more years until the tournament was finally discontinued in 1996.

In singles, no player was able to win the tournament more than once. However, the New Zealander Kelly Evernden was the only player to win both the singles and doubles; he is also the only domestic tournament winner. In doubles, Venezuelan Nicolás Pereira is the record holder with two wins. At the Challenger events, Byron Black won once each in singles and doubles.
