ATP Tour 500

The ATP Tour 500 (from 1990 to 1999 ATP Championship Series , from 2000 to 2008 ATP International Series Gold and from 2009 to 2018 ATP World Tour ) comprises a number of tournaments on the ATP Tour . The name is derived from the fact that 500 world ranking points have been awarded for victory since the 2009 season . The tournaments of the ATP Tour 500 are ranked between the ATP Tour 250 and the ATP World Tour Masters 1000 .

Tournament overview

The series initially comprised eleven tournaments from 2009 to 2014, eight of which were played on hard courts and three on clay. In 2015, two tournaments on grass were added, the total number rose to 13. All tournaments have a single field of 32 players and a double field of 16 double pairs. The only exceptions are the tournaments in Barcelona and Washington, DC , which each have a single field with 48 players. Since 2014, all tournaments have had a single qualification as well as a double qualification consisting of four pairs. 3 tournaments take place indoors and 10 outdoors.

Records

  • Most of the ATP World Tour 500 tournaments in a single season were won by Boris Becker (1990), Stefan Edberg (1991) and Juan Martín del Potro (2013) with four titles each. They are followed by Ivan Lendl (1990), Pete Sampras (1996), Rafael Nadal (2005), Novak Đoković (2009), David Ferrer (2015), Roger Federer (2015 and 2019), Andy Murray (2016) and Dominic Thiem (2019 ) with three titles each in one season.
  • Rafael Nadal holds the record for the most consecutive ATP World Tour 500 tournament victories in one season with three titles. In the 2005 season he won the tournaments in Acapulco, Barcelona and Stuttgart in a row.
  • Rafael Nadal (Acapulco 2005 to Barcelona 2006) and Roger Federer (Dubai 2014 to Basel 2015) each won five tournaments in which they participated. Federer set up the longest winning streak with 28 wins.
  • Rafael Nadal recorded the most victories at an ATP World Tour 500 tournament with eleven titles (2005–2009, 2011–2013, 2016–2018) in Barcelona. He is followed by Roger Federer with eight wins (Dubai) and seven titles (Basel), Novak Đoković with six wins (Beijing) and Andre Agassi (Washington), Đoković (Dubai) and Andy Murray (Queen's Club) with five titles each in the same tournament .
