In the same week the If Stockholm Open were played in Stockholm and the Bank Austria Tennis Trophy in Vienna . Nikolai Dawydenko won the tournament in the previous year and started this year as the first seeder. He failed in the quarterfinals against his compatriot Marat Safin in three sets. Safin reached the final, in which he was defeated by another Russian, Igor Kunitsyn , 6: 7 6 , 7: 6 4 , 3: 6. Kunizyn started the tournament unset and won his only career title on the ATP Tour. Safin was successful in doubles with Dmitri Tursunow the previous year. They competed with other partners this year and were eliminated early in the first round or in the quarter-finals. In the final Serhij Stachowskyj and Potito Starace prevailed against Stephen Huss and Ross Hutchins 7: 6 4 , 2: 6, [10: 6].

The field of participants in the individual competition consisted of 32 players, that of the doubles competition consisted of 16 pairs. The total prize money was $ 1,024,000; total financial liabilities were $ 1,049,000.
