Jelena Dokić ( Serbian - Cyrillic Јелена Докић ; born April 12, 1983 in Osijek , Yugoslavia ) is a former Australian tennis player of Serbian origin.
Career
Jelena Dokić, who played on the WTA Tour from 1998 , emigrated to Australia with her family in 1994 . Between 1994 and 2002 she competed for Australia, in 1999 she won the Hopman Cup together with Mark Philippoussis . Her greatest sporting success was her participation in the semi-finals at Wimbledon in 2000. The best place in the WTA world rankings reached Dokić on August 19, 2002 with rank 4. In May 2001 she was on the tour "Player of the Month".
In 2000 she took part in the Olympic Games in Sydney for Australia. She played for the bronze medal against Monica Seles and lost 1: 6 and 4: 6.
After a scandal during the Australian Open in 2001 , when Dokić and her father Damir accused the organizers of manipulating the draw, the family returned to Serbia and Dokić played again for their old homeland. This incident was not the last argument the father was involved in. Disputes with tournament organizers, coaches and officials of the WTA as well as private problems slowed his daughter's sporting success.
Dokic consequently separated from her father in November 2005 and went back to Australia. There she apologized for the previous incidents and assured that she wanted to play under the Australian flag again. In the same year, she played the qualification at a small tournament in Melbourne Park to receive a wildcard for the Australian Open, which she also succeeded.
At the WTA tournament in Auckland in January 2006, she lost her opening match against Julia Schruff , she had to cancel the planned appearance in Canberra due to injury. After her out in the first round in Melbourne against Virginie Razzano , she canceled several tournaments. In 2006 she took part in three other tournaments: In April she lost in qualifying for the Challenger tournament in Biarritz with 5-7, 5-7 against the little-known Italian Eleonora Punzo. At another Challenger tournament in Italy, she reached as a qualifier round two, in which she was subject to the Romanian Mădălina Gojnea. At Wimbledon she entered with a wildcard, but failed in the first round of qualification on Alexandra Stevenson, who had also slipped far in the world rankings .
In 2008 Dokić won the International Hessian Championships. On July 20, she defeated Michelle Gerards from the Netherlands 6-0, 6-0 in the final. She also won the title at the ITF tournaments in Florence and Caserta in May, which were also endowed with 25,000 US dollars. In addition, between May and July she made two semi-finals.
At the Australian Open , Dokić reached the quarter-finals surprisingly in 2009 (again with a wildcard at the start) after victories over Tamira Paszek , Anna Tschakwetadze , Caroline Wozniacki and Alissa Kleibanowa . There she had to admit defeat to Dinara Safina , who was placed in 3rd position, 4: 6, 6: 4 and 4: 6.
On March 6, 2011, Dokić won another WTA tournament after almost nine years. In the final in Kuala Lumpur she defeated Lucie Šafářová , who failed to use two match points in the tie-break of the second set and a 3-1 lead in the third set, 2: 6, 7: 6 9 , 6: 4.
After Dokić had to give up injured in the first round of the Family Circle Cup in 2012 , she did not play a match on the tour in 2012 and 2013. In May 2013, according to an interview, she trained for a comeback at smaller tournaments; However, she did not appear in any tournament. After undergoing wrist surgery, she announced in October 2013 that she was training under Todd Woodbridge to apply for a wildcard for the Australian Open in January 2014. In December she went to the corresponding elimination, but lost in round one against Jarmila Gajdošová . She actually received a wildcard for the doubles competition at the Australian Open, but she did not get past the first round alongside Storm Sanders . She has not competed on the women's tour since then.
In her autobiography, published in 2017, Dokic accused her father of using her as a vehicle to escape the poverty in which the family lived after emigrating to Australia and of regularly being physically and mentally abused by him.
