Panatta grew up as the son of the groundskeeper of a tennis club. In 1972 he was in an individual final in Gstaad for the first time, in the same year he was also in the final in Hamburg . The following year he won his first single title, as well as the first double title of his career. He celebrated the greatest success of his career in 1976 when he won the French Open in Paris . After his final victory over Harold Solomon , he was only the second Italian after Nicola Pietrangeli to win a Grand Slam tournament . Panatta won a total of nine singles and 17 doubles titles in the course of his career. He reached his highest ranking in the tennis world rankings in 1976 with position four in singles and 1980 with position 15 in doubles.
Panatta played 63 singles and 37 doubles games for the Italian Davis Cup team between 1970 and 1983 . He celebrated his greatest success with the team by winning the Davis Cup in 1976, when he was defeated only twice in 17 appearances in singles and doubles.
Panatta is the older brother of tennis player Claudio Panatta .
