Tom Gullikson (born September 8, 1951 in La Crosse , Wisconsin ) is a retired American tennis player and tennis coach.
Life
Gullikson and his twin brother Tim attended Northern Illinois University . In 1985 he won his first and only individual title. In addition, he was twice in a double final with his brother Tim, but they were both defeated. In 1978 he won three double titles at the side of his brother and a fourth together with Gene Mayer . Of the total of 15 double titles in his career, he won ten together with his brother. He reached his highest ranking in the tennis world rankings in 1984 with position 34 in singles and 1983 with position four in doubles.
His best individual result in a Grand Slam tournament was the quarter-finals at the US Open in 1982. In the doubles competition he reached the Wimbledon final with his brother in 1983, but they were defeated by Peter Fleming and John McEnroe in three sets. He was also in the semifinals of the Australian Open and the US Open. In 1984 he won the mixed competition at the US Open alongside Manuela Maleewa . They defeated John Fitzgerald and Elizabeth Sayers in three sets in the final .
After the end of his professional career, he became a tennis coach at the United States Tennis Association (USTA), where he looked after Todd Martin , Jennifer Capriati and Andy Roddick , among others . Between 1994 and 1999 he was team principal of the US Davis Cup team , which won the Davis Cup in 1995 . In 1996 he coached the US tennis team at the 1996 Summer Olympics in Atlanta , where Andre Agassi won the Olympic gold medal.
