Josef Scherrer

Josef Scherrer (born December 31, 1908 in Neumarkt an der Ybbs , † August 26, 1989 in Herzogenburg ) was an Austrian politician ( ÖVP ) and businessman.

Scherrer was a member of the Lower Austrian state parliament from 1954 to 1964 and a member of the National Council from 1964 to 1975 . From 1960 to 1969 he was Vice President of the ÖMV .

From 1968 to 1986 he was President of the Association Committee of the Austrian Cooperative Association and from 1973 Chairman of the Supervisory Board of the Central Bank of Austria's Volksbanks .

Live and act

Scherrer attended elementary , civil and commercial school and from 1924 worked as a bank clerk in the Herzogenburg commercial and industrial bank. In 1927 he was released from office for half a year as exhibition secretary to organize a large exhibition in the district above the Vienna Woods on the occasion of the celebrations for the city elevation of Herzogenburg.

In 1928 he helped found a building society, which then developed as the Österreichische Bauspar- und Realkreditkasse from commercial acquisition and business cooperatives to the general building society of the Volksbanks , became its organizational leader and, after having performed other tasks, as a member of the board from 1961 to 1964 elected.

In 1935 he became director of the Volksbank Ruprechtshofen on behalf of the Austrian Cooperative Association and helped to resolve the difficulties caused by the economic crisis.

After the annexation of Austria , Scherrer became mayor of Ruprechtshofen from 1939 to 1942. In 1940 he joined the NSDAP and was assigned membership number 8,509,924. In 1942 he was drafted into the military and was taken prisoner by the Soviets, from where he returned in 1945 and was punished politically, but was able to continue his political career.

In 1952 he became chairman of the Herzogenburg Economic Association, in 1955 a local councilor and between 1955 and 1965 was a city councilor in Herzogenburg. Among other things, he successfully campaigned for the re-establishment of the Herzogenburg District Court, which was repealed in 1942, and, as chairman of the exhibition association, organized the celebrations for the 850th anniversary of the monastery and 1200th anniversary of Herzogenburg. Scherrer was a member of the Lower Austrian state parliament from 1954 to 1964 and a member of the National Council from 1964 to 1975 .

In 1956 he was appointed to the supervisory board of Österreichische Mineralölverwaltung AG and worked from 1960 to 1969 as vice-president of the largest petrochemical company in Austria.

Functions in the Chamber of Commerce

Starting from his activity as a member of the board of directors from 1952 and as a managing board member from 1953 of the Volksbank Herzogenburg, he became involved in the interests of the commercial credit cooperatives as head of the specialist group and as a member of the section management in the Chamber of Commerce for Lower Austria from 1955 . In 1960 he became deputy chairman and in 1970 chairman of the money, credit and insurance section for Lower Austria. From 1973 he was head of the commercial cooperatives section, head of the monetary, credit and insurance section of the Federal Chamber of Commerce.

Functions in the cooperative association

In 1958 he was elected to the control committee of the Austrian cooperative association and he was involved in the revision of the statutes. In 1961 the management of the association was transferred to a full-time executive board, which was assisted by a voluntary association committee. Scherrer became vice-president of the association committee, took over the function of association committee president from Kommerzialrat Karl Lakowitsch in 1968 and exercised this until 1986.

From 1960, Scherrer was also a member of the supervisory board of the Central Bank of Austria's Volksbanks , where he was elected President of the Supervisory Board in 1973.

Functions in the fire service

Josef Scherrer had been a member of the Herzogenburg Volunteer Fire Brigade since 1949 and its commander from 1965 to 1973. In 1971 he was also named Oberbrandrat district fire chief for the district St. Pölten and therefore and member of the State Fire Council.
