David Pate (born April 16, 1962 in Los Angeles , California ) is a retired American tennis player . In 1991 he led the tennis world rankings in doubles.

Life

Godfather studied at Texas Christian University and in 1981 won the double title with Carl Richter at the NCAA championships . In 1983 he became a professional tennis player and was able to win his first individual title on the ATP World Tour in Tokyo the following year . In 1987 he won his second and last individual tournament in Los Angeles in the final against Stefan Edberg .

In doubles he was much more successful, between 1984 and 1993 he won 18 doubles titles, he was in a final 18 more times. He reached his highest ranking in the tennis world rankings in 1987 with position 18 in singles and in 1992 with position one in doubles.

In singles, he never got past the third round in Grand Slam tournaments. At the side of Scott Davis he won the Australian Open in 1991 , in the final they defeated Patrick McEnroe and David Wheaton in four sets. In the same year he stood, again with Davis, in the final of the US Open . There they were subject to John Fitzgerald and Anders Järryd . At the French Open and Wimbledon , he reached the quarter-finals as the best result.

Godfather was appointed to the US Davis Cup team once in the 3-2 semi-final win against Germany in 1991 . Although he had topped the double world rankings that year, he was no longer considered after his defeat at the side of Scott Davis against Eric Jelen and Michael Stich .
