The Challenge League will be held for the fourth time with ten teams. As in the Super League, the ten clubs each play four times against each opponent, twice in their home stadiums and twice away. In total, each team plays 36 games. The first placed will be promoted to the Super League at the end of the season, the last placed to the Promotion League. Because Biel's license was revoked in the course of the championship, only 34 games were played last.

1The game license was withdrawn from FC Biel-Bienne on April 27, 2016 for violating the license conditions. As a result, FC Biel-Bienne was immediately eliminated from the game and all matches that had already been played in the second half of the season were canceled. A total of five points had previously been deducted from him. Another deduction of three points is not yet final. On June 7, 2016, FC Biel-Bienne filed for bankruptcy. This means that FC Biel-Bienne has to start over in the second division .
