history

The community is known for the sanctuary above the grave of St. Felix of Nola in Nola near Cimitile, about 20 km northeast of Naples, which was one of the most important Christian pilgrimage sites of late antiquity , where excavation work by scientists from the Institute of Classics has been carried out since 1978 and Early Christian Archeology at the University of Münster and the Humboldt University in Berlin . The name of the place comes from the word for cemetery cimitero from the 2nd century AD. The first Christians buried their dead near the formerly pagan necropolis and hid from persecutors. A village developed around the monumental complex of buildings of the tomb and sanctuary of San Felice, which the nobleman Paulinus von Nola , later Bishop of Nola and patron saint of the city, visited in 395 while still serving as the governing governor of Campania. He had the existing buildings restored and a new, larger basilica built. In the course of time, a cathedral complex of a total of 13 buildings (basilicas, churches, chapels) emerged, which, with their frescoes and mosaics, are among the most important and fascinating early Christian evidence of Italy. You can visit among others: the Basilica di San Felice, the Basilica di San Tommaso, the (new) Basilica di San Giovanni, the chapels of San Martiri, San Calionio, Santa Maria degli Angeli.

In 1992 Pope John Paul II visited the archaeological site and Pope Benedict XVI. praised the special archaeological importance of Cimitiles at a general audience on December 12, 2007.
