Ercolano is a city west of Vesuvius on the Mediterranean Sea with 52,273 inhabitants (as of December 31, 2019) in the metropolitan city of Naples in the Italian region of Campania .
Location and dates
Ercolano is 8 km south-east of Naples, near the Gulf of Naples. The city stands on the site of the ancient city of Herculaneum .
The neighboring communities are Boscotrecase , Massa di Somma , Ottaviano , Pollena Trocchia , Portici , San Giorgio a Cremano , San Sebastiano al Vesuvio , Sant'Anastasia , Somma Vesuviana , Torre del Greco and Trecase .
history
The place was founded by the Greeks as Herakleion. The exact year of foundation is unknown. 89 BC The city became Roman and was called Herculaneum. This city was buried in an eruption of Mount Vesuvius in 79 AD . Until 1969 the place was called Resina.
