Ottaviano is a municipality with 23,669 inhabitants (as of December 31, 2019) in the metropolitan city of Naples , Campania region, located at the foot of Mount Vesuvius .

The neighboring towns of Ottaviano are Boscotrecase , Ercolano , Nola , San Gennaro Vesuviano , San Giuseppe Vesuviano , Somma Vesuviana , Terzigno , Torre del Greco and Trecase .

The castle and the Ottaviano estate were acquired in 1567 by Bernadetto de ' Medici , a brother of Pope Leo XI. The family branch he founded received the title Principe di Ottajano (Prince of Ottaviano) in the Kingdom of Naples in 1600 and died out in 1874 with Prince Giuseppe. The Castello Mediceo was passed on to the female line several times until the Prince Lancellotti di Lauro sold it to the Camorra boss Raffaele Cutolo in 1980 . It was confiscated in 1991 and passed into municipal ownership in 1995. In the 1980s, Ottaviano also gained fame as the Camorra stronghold.

In 1944 the city was badly damaged by the eruption of Mount Vesuvius . Now the place is right next to the Vesuvio National Park .

Between 1991 and 2001 the population increased from 21,973 to 22,670. This corresponds to a percentage increase of 3.2%.
