Giuseppe Sannino (born April 30, 1957 in Ottaviano , Italy ) is a former Italian football player and current coach . As a player who did not get beyond the amateur area, Sannino was active as a coach for the first division club Chievo Verona , after having previously coached AS Varese 1910 , AC Siena and US Palermo , among others . Since December 2013 he has coached the English second division club Watford FC .
Player career
Giuseppe Sannino was born on 30 April 1957 in Ottaviano, a small Italian town in the province of Naples in the Region of Campania , began playing football in 1975 in the northern Italian professional club FC Varese , who was then in the second-rate Series B was to be found. However, Sannino could not prevail in the team of FC Varese and was not used in the 1975/76 season. He then left the club and played in the further course of his football career for a large number of smaller clubs, of which Trento Calcio 1921 , AC Fanfulla , AC Pavia and Spezia Calcio , all of which are in the amateur field, are probably the best known.
In 1988 Giuseppe Sannino ended his active career as a football player in the jersey of the Provincial Club Virtus Entella at the age of 31. He then became a football coach.
Coaching career
Initially, Giuseppe Sannino worked as an assistant coach at AC Monza Brianza and Como Calcio, among others . In 1996 he took on his first head coach position when he coached the lower class club SBC Oltrepò for a year. From 1999 to 2001 Sannino was the coach of FC Südtirol and led the northern Italian club into the C2 series for the first time in its history and managed to stay in the league. Despite this success, Sannino had to wait until 2003 before a higher-class club wanted to sign him. Sannino's involvement with FC Varese was not crowned with success, however, he only finished sixteenth with the traditional club in Serie C1 in 2003/04. In the same year Varese had to file for bankruptcy and Giuseppe Sannino left the northern Italian city. Four years later, after having trained AS Cosenza Calcio , Calcio Lecco and the US Pergocrema , Sannino returned to the newly founded AS Varese in 1910.
A success story began for AS Varese in 1910 with Giuseppe Sannino as coach. From the Lega Pro Seconda Divisione Sannino led the club within two years to Serie B and was narrowly defeated on promotion to the Serie A . As table fourth in Serie B 2010/11 , AS Varese failed in 1910 only in the promotion playoffs at the later Serie A promoted Novara Calcio . In addition, the AS Varese 1910 team had the best defense in the league in the 2010/11 second division season with just 34 goals against, but they only managed 51 goals in 42 league games. Such values are common for Giuseppe Sannino's teams. His teams are often characterized by tactically good performances, especially in the defensive area.
In the summer of 2011, Giuseppe Sannino was the new coach of the first division promoted AC Siena, succeeding Antonio Conte, who had migrated to Juventus Turin . Relatively confidently managed to stay in the league as fourteenth in the 2011/12 Serie A , with a goal difference of 45:45 showing a very good value in this area for a newcomer. As the second major success of his time in Siena , Giuseppe Sannino and his team were the only ones to make it into the semi-finals of the Coppa Italia 2011/12 , after having eliminated FC Turin , Cagliari Calcio , US Palermo and Chievo Verona . It was only in the round of the last four teams that Siena lost to eventual cup winners SSC Napoli 2-1 and 0-2.
After the 2011/12 season, Giuseppe Sannino's time at AC Siena ended. He became the new coach at US Palermo and signed a contract in Sicily until 2014. On the third day of the 2012/13 season, Sannino was dismissed after two defeats and one draw. On March 12, 2013, he returned to the Bank of Palermo as the successor to Gasperini and is supposed to save Palermo from relegation. After relegation, he resigned and Gennaro Gattuso took over the job. A few weeks later, Sannino was introduced to the coaching bench in Chievo Verona as the successor to Eugenio Corini . After a weak start to the season, he was released early in the season, successor was Corini, whom Sannino had inherited a few months earlier.
On December 18, 2013 Sannino was introduced as the new coach of the English second division club Watford FC .
