history
The city of Vico Equense is likely a Phoenician or Greek foundation. Archaeological finds also prove the presence of the Etruscans , which was already postulated by the ancient historians Strabo and Pliny the Elder . In ancient times the town was called Aequana. This name could go back to the Equi , a local tribe that was involved in the fight against the Romans at the time of the Punic Wars . An earthquake in AD 62 and the major eruption of Mount Vesuvius in AD 79 caused severe damage. In the following centuries Vico Equense was destroyed again several times, for example in 553 by the Goths and in the 9th century by the Saracens . The castle Castello Giusso Vico Equense was in 1301 by Charles II. Of Naples built.
Attractions
The Church of the Annunziata , which is the only Gothic church on the Sorrento peninsula, is a central attraction . Other places of interest are the Castello Giusso , built in 1301 and rebuilt from the 17th to 19th centuries, and the Antiquarium , which exhibits archaeological finds from a necropolis dating from the 7th to 5th centuries BC . Come from BC.
Vico Equense is known today for its thermal baths and for the so-called one-meter pizza.
