Classes

The Firmicutes (Latin firmus "strong", cutis "skin") form a species-rich trunk within the domain of the bacteria .

The Firmicutes together with the Actinobacteria form the large group of mostly Gram-positive bacteria. However, they differ from actinobacteria, among other things, in their lower GC content . Many can form resistant endospores , some are phototrophic , some are syntrophic , and others play an important role as pathogens.

Today the Firmicutes include the following classes

Important representatives can be found in the genera Streptococcus , Lactococcus , Lactobacillus , Bacillus and Clostridium .
