The Bacilli class includes Gram-positive bacteria with a low GC content of DNA . They are mostly aerobic and rod-shaped.

Parts of the system are still uncertain. The Oscillospiraceae family is not mentioned in Bergey's Manual of Systematic Bacteriology , a reference work on the phylogenetic systematics of the prokaryotes. The genus Oscillospira is listed as incertae sedis (not reliably assigned).
Bacilli include bacteria that are used in food processing and some pathogens. Important representatives include the genera Bacillus , Lactococcus , Streptococcus and Listeria .
In English, the term “Bacilli” stands not only for the taxon , but also for the morphological type of rod-shaped bacteria in general.
