Planococcaceae are a family of bacteria of the Firmicutes .
Appearance
The cells are either rod-shaped or cocci-shaped . The genus Planococcus forms cocci with a diameter of 1 to 1.2 µm. The species Jeotgalibacillus alimentarius forms rods. Filaments are also of some types, e.g. B. Filibacter limicola formed. There are spore-forming species such. B. Types of Sporosarcina . Some species are mobile by gliding (" gliding motility "), such as Planomicrobium glaciei , others have flagella and are therefore mobile. The flagellated include z. B. Species from the genera Jeotgalibacillus and Planomicrobium .
metabolism
The species of the Planococcaceae are heterotrophic . Most of them are strictly aerobic , i.e. dependent on oxygen, but some are facultative aerobic, meaning that they can also live without oxygen. The catalase test is positive, the oxidase test is positive or negative depending on the species, even within the same genus. So is z. B. Caryophanon is oxidase negative, the species Planococcus columbae is oxidase positive, other types of Planococcus are again oxidase negative. The Gram test is mostly positive (since this family is one of the Firmicutes, this is also to be expected), but the test can also be negative ("Gram-variable") for various species of the genera Planomicrobium , Filibacter and Ureibacillus .
Systematics
The family of the Planococcaceae is placed in the order Bacillales in the department of the Firmicutes . The type genus is Planococcus . The following is a list of some well-known genera:
- Bhargavaea Manorama et al. 2009 emend. Verma et al. 2012
- Caryophanon Peshkoff 1939
- Chryseomicrobium Arora et al. 2011 emend. Raj et al. 2013
- Filibacter Maiden and Jones 1985
- Jeotgalibacillus Yoon et al. 2001 emend. Chen et al. 2010
- Kurthia Trevisan 1885
The genus Marinibacillus , which was previously in this family, is now placed under the genus Jeotgalibacillus .
etymology
The name "Planococcaceae" is derived from the Greek word "planos" (wanderer) and the Greek word "coccus" (grain) and refers to the ability of some species of the family to move (they are motile).
