George M. Garrity (born before 1980) is an American micro and molecular biologist who is particularly active in the fields of bioinformatics , biostatistics and biotechnology .

After obtaining his Doctor of Science (ScD) in microbiology and biochemistry at the University of Pittsburgh in 1980, he worked for a few months as a postdoctoral fellow at the USVA Medical Center there, before moving to the research laboratories of the pharmaceutical company Merck & Co. in 1981 . There he was a Senior Research Microbiologist in the Natural Products Screening Program until 1986, then as a Research Fellow until 1989 and finally as a Senior Research Fellow until 1996. Since then he has been Professor of Microbiology and Molecular Genetics at Michigan State University in East Lansing .

George M. Garrity is co-founder of "NamesforLife", a company that manages and provides a taxonomic database for biology. From 1996 to 2006 he worked as chief editor on the second edition of Bergey's Manual of Systematic Bacteriology , a standard work in the field of bacteriology . He is also the founder and editor-in-chief of the open access journal Standards in Genomic Sciences .

From 2005 to 2008 Garrity was deputy chairman of the decision-making committee of the " International Commission for the Systematics of Prokaryotes " (ICSP) and from 2008 to 2014 chairman of this commission. He is also a member of the core team of the Genomic Standards Consortium and has worked on the Ribosomal Database Project, which is dedicated to the research and analysis of ribosomal RNA . He heads the “Prokaryotic Super Program User Advisory Committee” founded by the US Department of Energy , whose task it is to create a uniform nomenclature for the phenotypes of microorganisms .

In 2011 he received the Van Niel International Prize in Bacterial Systematics for his work in the field of bacteria systematics . In August 2015 he was elected President of the Society for Industrial Microbiology and Biotechnology ; he is also a member of the American Association for the Advancement of Science .
