The Listeriaceae are a family of Gram-positive bacteria . The type genus Listeria is named after the British surgeon Joseph Lister .

features

The cells are short rods and can form cell filaments. They are aerobic or facultatively anaerobic . Endospores are not formed. The catalase test and the Voges-Proskauer test are positive. Species of the Brochothrix are not motile, Listeria is flagellated with peritrichal flagella and motile. The temperature for optimal growth for the genus Brochothrix is in the range of 20 to 25 ° C, for Listeria between 30 and 37 ° C. The types ferment u. a. Glucose to lactate .

Pathogenicity

The species Listeria monocytogenes causes listeriosis in humans and animals . Listeria monocytogenes and Listeria ivanovii are pathogenic in some animal species, especially sheep and goats . Since the pathogenic species Listeria monocytogenes is psychrotolerant (cold tolerant), packs of ready meals can also be contaminated with this species. Also, the type Brochothrix thermosphacta is psychrotolerant and can spoil cooling meat. Brochothrix is not known to be pathogenic .

Systematics

The Listeriaceae family belongs to the order Bacillales and consists of the following genera:

ecology

Species of Listeria are widespread in the environment and have been recognized as such a. found in soil, sewage, plants and in the feces of healthy humans and animals. Brochothrix was u. a. isolated from ground, meat and grass and packaged chilled meat products.
