Bacillaceae are a family of Gram-positive bacteria from the order Bacillales . Many of these mostly rod-shaped bacteria are aerobic and cannot live in the absence of oxygen. An important characteristic is the ability to form endospores under unfavorable conditions (e.g. lack of food, temperature, etc.) . However, not all species in this family are capable of this.

Systematics

The Bacillaceae family is placed in the order Bacillales in the Firmicutes division . There are more than 50 types known (as of 2013). Here is a selection:

The two species of Salibacillus were placed in the genus Virgibacillus : V. marismortui (Arahal et al. 1999) Heyrman et al. 2003 and V. salexigens (Garabito et al. 1997) Heyrman et al. 2003. With this the genre was dissolved.
