Fanny Smith (born May 20, 1992 in Aigle ) is a Swiss freestyle skier . She specializes in the discipline of ski cross . Her greatest successes to date are the 2013 world championship title, the 2018 Olympic bronze medal and winning the discipline classification in the 2012/13 and 2018/19 World Cup seasons.

biography

Smith grew up in Villars-sur-Ollon in the canton of Vaud . She is the daughter of an American and an Englishwoman who were both naturalized in Switzerland. As is usual with ski crossers, she was initially an alpine skier. As a 13-year-old she won the Super-G youth championship in western Switzerland and was subsequently accepted into the squad of the Swiss-Ski National Competence Center. When she was 16, however, she switched to the freestyle discipline ski cross, which appealed to her more.

On March 6, 2008 Smith made his debut in Grindelwald in the Freestyle Skiing World Cup , but could not finish the race. She won her first World Cup points on January 5th, 2009 as 19th of the race in St. Johann in Tirol ; this was her best result in the 2008/09 season . She was among the top ten for the first time on December 21, 2009 in San Candido , where she came seventh. She achieved her first podium on January 24, 2010, when she was second in Lake Placid . Smith was the youngest member of the Swiss team at the 2010 Winter Olympics ; she was eliminated in the semifinals and ranked seventh. The FIS she recorded a month later as the " Rookie of the Year from".

In late August 2010, Smith won the gold medal at the Junior World Championships in Cardrona . For this success, she received the award as Young Athlete of the Year 2010 from the Swiss Sports Aid Foundation . On December 19, 2010, she celebrated her first World Cup victory in Innichen . A month later she finished third in the 2011 Winter X Games . She also won the Swiss Championships in Arosa in 2011 . At the start of the 2011/12 season Smith drove in Innichen to fourth place; However, she fell in the final round and tore a cruciate ligament , which ended the season prematurely for her.

In the first race of the following 2012/13 season , Smith immediately returned to the top when she won the second World Cup in Nakiska . With three more victories and two third places, she took the lead in the World Cup discipline early on and did not give it up until the end of the season. At the 2013 World Championships in Voss , she lived up to her role as a favorite and won the gold medal. In the 2013/14 season , Smith stood on the podium of a World Cup seven times, including three times as the winner. The decision to win the discipline classification was not made to her disadvantage until the last race, when she had to let Canadian Marielle Thompson pass her. The 2014 Winter Olympics ended disappointingly for her when she was eliminated in the semi-finals after a driving error and ultimately only finished eighth.

In the 2014/15 season Smith won three times. There was also a third place, which was enough for third place in the discipline classification. She won the bronze medal at the 2015 World Championships in Kreischberg . She could not contest the season finale in Megève because of a contusion of the coccyx she suffered during training . In qualifying for the first World Cup race of winter 2015/16 in Montafon , Smith had a bad fall and broke his collarbone , which meant that she missed the rest of the season. In the 2016/17 season she achieved seven World Cup podiums (five times second, twice third), which resulted in third place in the discipline ranking. At the end of the season, the 2017 World Championships in Sierra Nevada , she won the silver medal.

In mid-December 2017, Smith achieved another World Cup victory (the twelfth overall) after more than two and a half years. In the further course of the 2017/18 season , three podium places were added, including another victory. She won the bronze medal at the 2018 Winter Olympics in Pyeongchang . In the 2018/19 season, Smith finished on the podium in seven of eleven races. With a total of six victories and a third place, she won the discipline ranking for the second time in six years. She won the silver medal at the 2019 World Championships in Park City .
