Ophelie David (* 6. July 1976 in Cucq , Pas-de-Calais as Ofelia Rácz ) is a French freestyle skier . She specializes in ski cross and is one of the world's most successful athletes in this discipline. She was once world champion and won the discipline rankings in the Freestyle Skiing World Cup seven times in a row from 2004 to 2010 , plus three overall World Cup victories.

biography

David is the daughter of János Rácz , a Hungarian basketball player who took part in the 1964 Summer Olympics and later emigrated to France. In her youth she was an alpine skier . She was not accepted into the French junior squad, which is why she started for Hungary. She took part in the 1994 Winter Olympics, but retired in both slalom and giant slalom. In 1995 she was able to win her only FIS race , at the 1996 Alpine World Championships she achieved 16th place in the combination . At the end of the 1995/96 season she resigned and started working as a ski instructor in the winter sports resort of Alpe d'Huez .

The World Ski Federation FIS added the discipline of ski cross to its program in the 2002/03 season . On November 30, 2002 David took part in the first ski cross world cup race in history and immediately achieved fourth place. In the following 2003/04 season , she drove in all eight races held in the top ten. She won three races and won the discipline classification. In the 2004/05 season she won two races and reached a podium in two more, which she could repeat the victory in the discipline classification. The in Ruka discharged 2005 World Championships , when ski cross for the first time on the program, she was classified behind the Austrian Karin Huttary and the Swede Magdalena Iljans in third place.

In all five races of the 2005/06 World Cup season , David stood on the podium, twice as the winner, twice as second and once as third. She secured the discipline ranking again and for the third time the overall World Cup. Before the World Championships in 2009 , she was considered a huge favorite, but in Inawashiro , Japan , she was unexpectedly eliminated in the semifinals and had to be content with seventh place. In 2010 David won the ski cross competition at the X Games for the fourth time in a row . Before the 2010 Winter Olympics , she was one of the favorites. In Cypress Mountain , she was eliminated in the quarterfinals and classified ninth. With two wins and six more podium places, however, she won the ski cross discipline for the seventh time in a row.

David was able to celebrate another World Cup victory in the 2010/11 season , but for the first time since the 2002/03 season another female rider, Anna Holmlund , won the discipline classification. In the 2011/12 season David was on the podium five times in World Cup races (including a win in St. Johann in Tirol), which earned her second place in the Ski Cross World Cup. In the 2012/13 season , David was still among the world's best. She won a World Cup race, added two second and one third place. She won the bronze medal at the 2013 World Championships in Voss . During the 2013/14 season , she was on the podium at a World Cup race six times, one of which was the winner. At the 2014 Winter Olympics , she advanced to the final run, but just missed out on a medal in fourth place.

In the 2014/15 World Cup season , David was third on the podium four times. However, she achieved the best result of the season at the 2015 World Championships in Kreischberg , where she won the silver medal. Another third place came in the 2015/16 World Cup season . In the 2016/17 season, she finished third in the World Cup twice. At the highlight of the season, the 2017 World Championships in the Sierra Nevada , she surprised everyone by winning the bronze medal at the age of 40.
