Le Matin ("The Morning") is a French-language Swiss internet newspaper .

In 2018 (January – September) it reached 0.978–1.218 million unique clients, 9.090–10.813 million visits and 61.738–79.776 million page impressions . The editor-in-chief is Laurent Siebenmann.

From 1984 to 2018, Le Matin was also a daily tabloid . This emerged in 1984 from the Tribune de Lausanne founded in 1893 , which in 1895 took over L'Estafette, which had been published since 1862 . Although Le Matin was the most widely read newspaper in French- speaking Switzerland , it caused a deficit of CHF 6.3 million a year most recently and was discontinued on July 21, 2018.

Le Matin Dimanche has been published on Sunday since 1972 . He was not affected by the discontinuation of the printed newspaper.

history

The previous newspaper Tribune de Lausanne

In 1911, the Tribune de Lausanne was taken over by the Impriméries Réunies , publisher of the Feuille d'Avis de Lausanne ( 24 hours since 1972 ). In 1925 the company became part of the Payot and Lamunière families' Lousonna SA . In 1982 it took over part of the Lousonna press company, including the Feuille d'Avis de Lausanne and the Tribune de Lausanne , under the name Edipresse SA

The problematic in-house competition between the two Lausanne papers led to a new concept for the Tribune de Lausanne in 1984 . From April 9, 1984 it appeared under the new name Le Matin . The renunciation of the previous name (and later the subtitle Le quotidien romand ) was intended to underline that the newspaper now saw itself as supraregional, albeit with regional pages. It set itself the goal of becoming number 2 behind the respective cantonal newspaper in every French-speaking canton, with a special focus on Geneva. André Jaunin remained editor-in-chief.

In 2010/2011 Edipresse sold its Swiss media activities to Tamedia .

Le Matin semaine

The old newspaper head (until 2011)

The Matin semaine appeared in tabloid format and had last one WEMF - certified circulation of 37'550 (previous year 40'948.) Sold or 37'634 (previous year 40'979.) Distributed copies and a reach of 218,000 (prev. 234,000) readers.

Like all printed daily newspapers, Le Matin has had to accept a sharp drop in circulation for several years. The circulation sold has fallen by 32,462 from 70,012 to 37,550 copies since 2007, that is 46.37%.

Development of the circulation sold according to WEMF circulation bulletins (see details 2007 and 2018)

In 2016, Le Matin launched the daily, digital paid subscription Le Matin du Soir to complement the daily newspaper and the free website. Le Matin du Soir was a web app for smartphones, tablets and computers and otherwise only offered content that was available on the next day and an in-depth look at the day's events as a mix of topics that was tailored to the interests of the user.

In August 2017 Tamedia announced that the editorial offices of the loss-making Le Matin and 20 minutes, also published by Tamedia, would be merged for 2018. The two editors-in-chief, Grégoire Nappey and Philippe Favre, ran the editorial team together. The merger resulted in six job cuts, including four journalists. The merged editorial team has also been purchasing national sport from the new Tamedia editorial team since 2018 and now also operates the Newsexpress, which supplies all French-language Tamedia news portals with breaking news , short agency reports , photo spreads and live tickers .

Since January 1, 2018, only one French and one German-speaking Tamedia editorial team has been creating the international / national cover (domestic, foreign, business and sport) for the 12 paid daily and 2 Sunday newspapers of Tamedia. Ariane Drayer is in charge of the French-speaking editorial team (she also remains editor-in-chief of Le Matin Dimanche ).

On June 7, 2018, Tamedia announced that the printed edition of Le Matin would be discontinued on July 21 due to the ongoing losses. Since then, the newspaper has only been available online. As a result, 41 employees are affected by a possible layoff. 15 employees would be sufficient for the Internet newspaper . Laurent Siebenmann became the new editor-in-chief. Le Matin Dimanche is not affected by the appointment.

Le Matin Bleu

After Edipresse had rejected a minority stake in Tamedia's free newspaper , 20 minutes , which had been announced for 2006 , Edipresse published the free newspaper Le Matin Bleu on October 31, 2005 , which was distributed in all centers in western Switzerland. 20 minutes was published on March 8, 2006. After Tamedia took over Edipresse's Swiss media activities, Le Matin Bleu was discontinued on September 25, 2009.
