Nick Zoricic (born February 19, 1983 in Sarajevo , SFR Yugoslavia as Nikola Zoričić ; † March 10, 2012 in Interlaken , Switzerland ) was a Canadian freestyle skier in the discipline of ski cross and ski racer .

biography

Born in Yugoslavia , Zoricic immigrated to Canada with his family at the age of five and grew up in Toronto . As is usual with ski crossers, he was initially an alpine ski racer. In December 1998 he started for the first time in FIS races and in the Nor-Am Cup . In the 2003/04 and 2004/05 seasons he took part in a total of four World Cup slaloms, but was never able to qualify for the second round of the top 30. For several years he looked in vain to join the world's elite and in 2008 switched to freestyle skiing.

Zoricic made his debut in the Freestyle World Cup on January 19, 2009 in Lake Placid , where he finished 61st. He won his first World Cup points on February 24 of the same year with 15th place in Branäs . In the 2009/10 season he could not qualify for the 2010 Winter Olympics in Vancouver . Zoricic's breakthrough came in the 2010/11 World Cup season. He was never worse than eighth and achieved his first podium finish on January 7th, 2011 with second place in St. Johann in Tirol . A year later, on January 15, 2012, he finished third in the Les Contamines World Cup .

death

Zoricic had a serious accident at the World Cup race on March 10, 2012 in Grindelwald , Switzerland . During the target jump he got off the piste and crashed into the safety nets, where he suffered a severe traumatic brain injury . After a 50-minute attempt at resuscitation, he succumbed to his injuries in the Interlaken hospital.

Private

His father Predrag "Bebe" Zoričić is the FIS trainer at the Craigleith Ski Club in Canada.
