The T43 series is a Swedish diesel locomotive that was built by Nydqvist och Holm (NOHAB) between 1961 and 1963. The locomotive built for Statens Järnvägar (SJ) has a two - stroke diesel engine of the type GM EMD 12-567C from General Motors . With multiple controls, up to three locomotives can be operated. The locomotives are diesel-electric powered. Two locomotives have been fitted with new engines in recent years. No. 257 was given a more environmentally friendly engine with better emissions in 2001, while No. 215 was converted in 2005 into a hybrid locomotive with a combined diesel and battery drive with significantly lower fuel consumption.

Color scheme

The T43 is one of the locomotive types on the Swedish railway network that had the most color variants. The locomotives were originally painted in red, white and blue. This color was changed to orange in the 1970s, modeled on the T44. At Banverket some were painted yellow with a blue cab and blue stripes on the sides, then the cab was painted red. The TGOJ locomotives were green with blue lines on the ends. When the locomotive was sold to private railway companies, the color variants were expanded again. For the 150th anniversary, Inlandsbanan repainted the T43 222 in its original color.

commitment

The use of the T43 practically made it possible to shut down steam locomotives in Sweden. Although there were still steam locomotives as reserve locomotives, none of them were used as planned after 1963. Until the mid-1980s, the locomotives were used for passenger and freight transport. The main area of application was the Blekinge kustbana , where they drove in passenger traffic. The T43 was used for freight traffic in large parts of the country. In the late 1980s, the T44 took over many of its missions. The SJ gave the locomotives to Banverket and the TGOJ in the 1990s . From there they came to various private companies such as Green Cargo , Infranord , TÅGAB , Hector Rail , Peterson Rail and Inlandsbanan AB . The existing locomotives are used almost exclusively in freight transport and shunting.

Most of the Banverket locomotives were transferred to Svensk Tågteknik AB between 2000 and 2007 . These were used for construction trains, but were also resold.

Hector Rail 841

Six locomotives were bought by Hector Rail and used there as the 841 001 to 006 series. SJ T43 216 had been a strategic reserve with Banverket since 1999, was loaned to Ofotbanen AS from 2005 to 2009 and was taken over as 841 001 in 2009. The five other locomotives all came from Svensk Tågteknik AB (STT T43 228 - 841 002, STT T43 223 - 841 003, STT T43 225 - 841 004, STT T43 212 - 841 005 and STT T43 219 - 841 006).
