Ofotbanen AS ( OBAS ) was a Norwegian railway company providing services on the Jernbaneverket rail network . The company was founded in March 2001 with headquarters in Narvik . In 2008 the company went bankrupt. The associated Ofotbanen Drift AS was retained until 2010 and then also went bankrupt.

Train operation

On June 15, 2003 the company took over the passenger train traffic on the Ofotbane in cooperation with Connex , which was responsible for the traffic on the Swedish side .

The operating staff were mainly train drivers, train attendants, station staff and workshop employees who were formerly employed by Norges Statsbaner , supplemented by some train drivers from Sweden and some NSB pensioners. Rail operations were later extended to most parts of the country, especially in freight traffic. Passenger train traffic between Oslo and Stockholm was carried out a timetable period under the name Union Express under the license of Ofotbanen AS . In addition, there were special trains to a lesser extent, especially on the Ofotbane, and also on various routes in Eastern Norway.

Ofotbanen AS BAS transported wood and containers in freight trains in southern and especially in eastern Norway. At the beginning of 2007 Autolink AS , a company that is responsible for the transport of road vehicles from the manufacturing plant to the dealers, took over 40% of the shares in the company in order to ship new vehicles with Ofotbanen AS . This car transport traffic was taken over by CargoNet , which had previously carried these trains.

Ofotbanen AS also introduced its own car train on the entire Oslo – Narvik route, with the locomotives running the entire route. A sleeping car was carried along for the rest times of the train drivers.

Different views in the cooperation between the two companies led Autolink AS to set up its own freight company CargoLink AS for these transports. The passenger train traffic on the Ofotbane was taken over by Statens Järnvägar from June 2008 after SJ had won the tender for all traffic on the Stockholm – Narvik route.

In November 2008 the company was stopped due to financial problems. As a result, the Norwegian employees of Ofotbanen AS lost their jobs in Narvik, even though the Norwegian government had promised in the 2005 election campaign that no railway worker should lose his job as a result of tenders. Two train attendants who went to the labor court forced a job at SJ with a job in Narvik in accordance with EU regulations regarding a transfer of operations.

The vehicle fleet consisted of used locomotives and passenger cars that were taken over by NSB and Green Cargo .
