NSB Bmeo Type 68 , later NSB BM 68 or NSB Type 68 is the name of a Norwegian electric multiple unit that was designed by Norges Statsbaner for medium distances. Thirty of them were produced in two series by Norsk Elektrisk & Brown Boveri and Skabo jernbanevognfabrik .

Designation Bmeo

Bmeo Type 68a and Bmeo Type 68b are only the type designations of the motor vehicles. Like the designations BM 68a and BM 68b later used according to the 1970 numbering plan, they are used for the entire multiple unit consisting of motor cars, intermediate cars and control cars.

history

Based on the Cmeo type 107 series , NSB ordered high-speed railcars for medium distances from Skabo jernbanevognfabrik and Norsk Elektrisk & Brown Boveri . The technical equipment was similar to that of the Cmeo type 7 (from 1956 NSB type 67 ). In contrast to this one, which only drove 70 km / h, the new vehicles could run at 100 km / h. The seats and the interior were designed for longer distances. The first multiple unit was ordered in 1953. The Østfoldbanen , Vestfoldbanen , Gjøvikbanen , Randsfjordbanen and Kongsvingerbanen were intended to be used.

The railcars were in two versions

  • "68a" from 1956 to 1958 (68 01-21)
  • "68b" from 1960 to 1961 (68 22–30)

built.

The type 68a multiple units consisted of a multiple unit (Bmeo 68a), an intermediate car (Bo3h type 1, 18875-18895) and a control car (BFo3c type 1; 18669-18693).

A Type 68b train consisted of a multiple unit (Bmeo 68b), an intermediate car (Bo3i type 1, 18896–18904) and a control car (BFo3d type 1, 18694–18702).

The A series had built-in seats, the B series the seat cushions in the railcar and control car could be moved. In addition, the seats in the middle car could be rotated in the direction of travel and, like in an aircraft, could be folded down when at rest. These intermediate cars had the highest travel standard for the NSB in the early 1960s.

Both motor and control cars (Bmeo and BFo3) were built by Norsk Elektrisk & Brown Boveri (NEBB) and Skabo jernbanevognfabrik, while the intermediate cars (Bo3) were built by Skabo and Strømmens Værksted .

The Type 68 trains could be coupled and driven with older types of railcars.

BM68

With effect from May 31, 1970 NSB decreed a new assignment between the vehicle types and their numbering. The continuous numbers from 18.xxx on have been canceled. The railcars Bmeo 68a and Bmeo 68b were given the new designations BM 68A and BM 68B, the control cars BFo3c and BFo3d became BFS 68A and BFS 68B and the intermediate cars Bo3n and Bo3i became B 68A and B 68B.

Stakes and whereabouts

After their delivery, the trains were used as express trains on the Østfoldbane between Oslo and Halden . They were in full operation in their intended area of operation until 1990. From then on, they were replaced on long-distance routes by the newly delivered NSB Type 70 trains. Some trains were then used on the Arendalsbane and in Narvik , and they took over the local traffic in Telemark .

The shutdown of the trains began in 1994, the last one was in use in the region around Drammen until spring 2001 .

Trains 68.21 , 68.22 and 68.23 remained with the transfer of local passenger traffic to the Ofotbanen in Narvik. 68.23 was given the company's color scheme, was renovated and used for passenger services from Narvik. It was also used there without an intermediate car. After the bankruptcy of Ofotbanen AS , the whereabouts of wagons 21 and 22 are unknown, 68.23 is in operation at NJA .

Trains 68.26 and 68.29 are preserved in a museum at Stiftelsen Rjukanbanen (SRjB) and are stored in Tinnoset .
