history

The Operettenbühne Wien was founded in the 1996/97 season by the Austrian actor and operetta buffo Heinz Hellberg . Hellberg was a member of the Vienna Boys' Choir and for many years a member of the Vienna Volksoper ensemble . The performances are shown in the entire German-speaking area, but mainly in Germany . The Operettenbühne Vienna has made guest appearances in Switzerland, the Netherlands, Luxembourg, Denmark, Italy and France. But she also gave guest appearances in the People's Republic of China and Japan . Since it was founded, the Operettenbühne Wien has played over 2000 performances.

The repertoire mainly includes classical works by composers of the Viennese operetta such as Johann Strauss , Carl Millöcker , Carl Zeller , Franz Lehár and Emmerich Kálmán . In addition, modern revue operettas, musical comedies and singspiele are performed. In addition, there are themed evenings and gala concerts on the city of Vienna as an operetta metropolis, on Wiener Lied or on Viennese folk music. The Vienna Operettenbühne shows two new productions each year, one in the spring tour and the second in the autumn tour. Heinz Hellberg is responsible for the staging, the overall musical direction (partly also as a conductor) and the moderation. Hellberg repeatedly appears in the productions as an actor and singer.

The productions of the Operettenbühne Wien are shown with trained vocal soloists, a choir, a ballet ensemble and its own live orchestra, the orchestra of the Operettenbühne Wien. Hellberg managed to hire singers from the Vienna State Opera and the Vienna Volksoper for his productions . The majority of the costumes come from the costume stocks of the Austrian federal theaters.

The first production of the operetta stage was in 1996 Kálmán's operetta Countess Mariza . The other previous productions of the Operettenbühne Wien included u. a. Axel an der Himmelstür (1997), Das Dreimäderlhaus (1998 and 2014), The Merry Widow (2001; with Ulrike Steinsky in the title role), Sissy (2002/2003 season), Pariser Leben (2004), The Count of Luxembourg (2006 / 07 and spring 2013), Two Hearts in Three-Four Time (2007), Black Forest Girl (Spring 2008 and Autumn 2012), A Waltz Dream (2008), Countess Mariza (2009), The Tsarevich (Spring 2009 and Autumn 2015), Wiener Blut (2009 ), Im Weißen Rößl (spring 2010; with Heinz Hellberg as pay waiter Leopold), Paganini (October / November 2010), Der Vetter aus Dingsda (2010/11), Die Fledermaus (2011), The bird dealer (spring 2012), Der Zigeunerbaron (Spring 2013), Die Zirkusprinzessin (2014), Mask in Blau (Spring Tour 2015) and Der Bettelstudent (Autumn Tour 2015). In the productions takes Susanne Hellberg often Hellbergs wife, the role of soubrette .

In the 2015/16 season, the Vienna Operettenbühne celebrated its 20th anniversary. A new production of the operetta Der Bettelstudent was shown for the 2015/16 anniversary tour . The resumption of the mask in blue and a new production of the operetta Die Csárdásfürstin are planned for the 2016/17 season .

Since 1999, the Vienna Operettenbühne has been performing at the Luisenburg Festival in Wunsiedel every year with several performances . In August 2014, the Operettenbühne Vienna performed the operetta “Die Zirkusprinzessin” at the Luisenburg Festival. In August 2015, the operetta Mask was shown there in blue . In this production, Hellberg also took on the role of the Argentine businessman and sleazy seducer Don Pedro del Vargas.

In 2004 Hellberg and the Vienna Operettenbühne also organized the summer “Vienna Operetta Festival” as open-air performances on the Krieau harness racing track in the Vienna Prater . The first production of the Vienna Operetta Festival was an open-air performance of the operetta Die Zirkusprinzessin ; In 2005, open-air performances of Kálmán's operetta Die Csárdásfürstin followed as a co-production with the Wiener Stadthalle ; Soloists were Ulrike Steinsky (Sylva Varescu), Alexandru Badea (Prince Edwin Ronald), Susanne Fugger (Countess Stasi), as well as Kurt Liederer and Hilde Rom (as Prince and Princess from and to Lippert-Weylersheim). However, the production was only slightly utilized and led to high losses, which were criticized by the Vienna Control Office.

The productions of the Operettenbühne Vienna are considered conventional and " true to the work "; they are based on the expectations and viewing habits of a generally older subscription audience. The basic structure of the original version of the respective operetta is always retained. The dialogues are partially modernized, rewritten and adapted to the needs of a tour production by Hellberg. Some of the operettas are slightly edited musically and provided with modern arrangements; so most recently in the operetta Mask in Blue , where Hellberg worked with a small big band . According to its artistic director Heinz Hellberg, the Vienna Operettenbühne achieved an overall occupancy rate of 95% in recent years.
