The trotting track is located in the eponymous Krieau ( Krie-Au ), part of the Vienna Prater . It has a length of 1000 meters and a width of eight horses per starting row. Their surface is sand.

The grandstands built in the 1910s are functionally designed, three-storey reinforced concrete structures . Colorful majolica reliefs in the style of the Wiener Werkstätte are attached to the grandstand. Opposite is an administration building with half-timbered elements, which was built at the end of the 19th century. The judges' tower is a five-storey steel frame structure crowned by a three-storey, lantern-shaped structure.

history

The square and track have their indirect origin in the International Horse Show held from September 18 to 27, 1873 , during which an international trot race took place on September 22, 1873 . The venue was the Prater-Hauptalle , which was closed for the occasion . Those responsible for the organization of the race day were essentially those personalities who were to bring the trotting club into being a year later .

In April 1874, under the protectorate of Oberststallmeister Karl Ludwig von Grünne (1808–1884), the trotting association to promote horse breeding in Austria-Hungary was founded (President: Kálmán Hunyady de Kéthely , 1828–1901). The purpose of the association was aimed not only at the organization of trotting races, but also at exhibitions, awards for breeding material and the support of existing trotting arenas. The seat of the association was Vienna.

On Friday, May 29, 1874, the club's first races took place in the kk Prater between 9 a.m. and 1 p.m. In contrast to previous similar events, the entire length of the main avenue was used for the competition . In the presence of Archduke Wilhelm (1827-1894) there were passages for single and two-horse , two- and four-wheeled carriage and a trot betting driving for two-horse nummerirte cab . The races were started next to the Lusthaus , the distances were 4422 and 8844 meters respectively. Telegraphy was used to measure time . The closure of the adjacent Prater area and the fact that it was only able to follow the linear racing action in sections was disadvantageous for the public. Over the years, the association has incurred considerable costs due to the event-related construction of grandstands.

On November 15, 1875, the demolition of the central building began rotunda adjoining side of the pavilion built for the 1873 World Exhibition Industrial Palace . The space that had become free and stretched from the east portal of the rotunda was subsequently left to the trotting club to create the racing arena. The Krieau trotting track was opened as a stable track on September 29, 1878. Like the Moscow Hippodrome  , it is one of the oldest European horse racing tracks. In the autumn of 1879 the Trotting Club initiated the renovation of the unplaned interior of the track in a state that would allow the Society for the Awards of Good Campagne Riders to hold riding demonstrations.

The first grandstand was built in 1882. The reform ideas of the sports and military journalist Viktor Silberer (1846-1924) contributed to the popularization of trotting. The first trotting derby in the Krieau took place in 1884, initiated and regulated in 1882 by the board of directors of the trotting club. Between 1885 and 1887 extensive adjustments were made according to the plans of Anton and Josef Drexler .

From 1911 to 1913 the grandstands were rebuilt according to plans by the architects Emil Hoppe , Marcel Kammerer and Otto Schönthal . In the period after the First World War , the large landowner and politician Ernst Rüdiger von Starhemberg was President of the Trabrenn-Verein. In 1919 the judges tower was built. Racing was temporarily suspended at the end of the Second World War . The bomb damage to the facility could be repaired quickly and in November 1945 another race took place in the Krieau.

From 1949 until his death in 1981, the entrepreneur Manfred Mautner Markhof senior was president of the Wiener Trabrenn-Verein. During his term of office, the renovation of 1960/1961, during which, among other things, the main grandstand was glazed.

The trotting track today

At the turn of the millennium, the harness racing track was renovated. From 2004 the politician Anton Gaál was president of the Wiener Trabrenn-Verein. In 2017 he was succeeded by Peter Truzla in this role.

In the years 2007–2010, a new office and residential district was built in the Krieau with Viertel Zwei . In the coming years, the second quarter is to be expanded, with more office space and living space for 1,800 people being created largely on the area of the trotting track. The trotting track is listed and will be preserved. In the east, the stables up to Meiereistraße are to be renovated and adapted for commercial use. The currently desolate grandstands are being renovated. The function of grandstand 1 is retained, grandstands 2 and 3 are to be adapted for commercial use. The architectural competitions were concluded in May 2014 and construction work began in 2015. The completion of the 36,700 m² area along the Trabrennstraße was planned for 2017.

In 2007 the area around the trotting track was sold by the City of Vienna to a private company, the track itself only came into private ownership in 2018. The track was leased to the trotting club for 25 years.
