Live and act

Karl Ludwig Grünne , the only son of Philipp Ferdinand Grünne , joined his father's Uhlan regiment in 1828. In 1838 he was promoted to major, in 1843 to colonel and at the same time head of the court of Archduke Stephan . Appointed in 1847 to the real secret council of the kk, in August 1848 he was appointed chief steward of the then Archduke and later Emperor Franz Joseph I. On October 19, 1848 he was appointed major general, on December 2, 1848 the first adjutant general of the now emperor From that day he headed the military chancellery. In this position Grünne was promoted to Lieutenant Field Marshal on July 12, 1850 .

After Austria's defeat in the Sardinian War in 1859, the displeasure of the population and the army was directed especially against Grünne , who was blamed for the outcome of the war as a representative of the spirit prevailing in the army and people, which did not allow great innovations to arise .

In a handwritten letter of October 20, 1859, the emperor relieved him of his post as first adjutant general in grace , appointed him uno actu to the chief equestrian and awarded him the Grand Cross of the Order of St. Stephen . At the Emperor's request, Grünne kept the captain's position in the bodyguard gendarmerie .

On November 22, 1864, Count Grünne was promoted to general of the cavalry, on August 23, 1865 to the owner of the Uhlan Regiment No. 1 and in 1865 Knight of the Order of the Golden Fleece .

Grünne held the office of chief stableman until November 3, 1875, whose health was already badly damaged in those days. When he retired he lived in Baden (during the summer months) in complete seclusion .

From 1883 he was a member of the Herrenhaus , the upper house of the Austrian Imperial Council , but had to stay away from many meetings due to his physical condition.

Karl Graf Grünne was married to Caroline, a born Countess von Trauttmansdorff-Weinsberg , on May 16, 1831 . In later years the couple separated, not on the basis of a judicial, but a private separation by mutual consent . The marriage had three daughters and two sons, Philipp, Feldmarschallleutnant , and Rudolph, Colonel a. D.

Count Grünne had been a favorite of Archduchess Sophie , who had a strong influence on the young Franz Joseph . The unbroken recognition of Grünne by the ore house was shown, among other things, in the fact that both Emperor Franz Joseph I and Crown Prince Rudolf , accompanied by his wife, Stephanie , each paid a home visit to the sick person.

After being consecrated in the Imperial and Royal Court Church ( Frauenkirche, Maria der Glorreich ) in Baden near Vienna, Count Grünne's body was transferred to Dobersberg , where it was buried in the family crypt on June 19, 1884.
