Life

As the eldest son of hosiery -Fabrikanten Philipp Heinrich Meckel (* 1755), he came from a long-established Lüdenscheider merchant family. He went to Elberfeld to begin an apprenticeship as a businessman in the von der Heydt-Kersten banking house .

On October 26, 1813, he married Charlotte Engels (born March 8, 1791 in Barmen, † December 1, 1852 in Elberfeld), who was a daughter of Philipp Engels. Engels was the nephew of Johann Simons , founder of the later world-famous silk weaving mill Johann Simons Erben .

In the same year, Meckel and Friedrich Rurmann founded the company Rurmann & Meckel , a factory for silk and half-silk goods. This company achieved a great reputation, so that it was presented to the Prussian Crown Prince as a model company in 1825.

Soon afterwards, in addition to his entrepreneurial activities, Meckel also became involved in public life in the city of Elberfeld. In 1830 he founded the second Elberfeld Kornverein and became a member of the five-person committee that led the aid organization. A year later he also became a co-founder of the Elberfeld Citizens' Association. After Carl Hecker left , he took over the interim chairmanship of the Chamber of Commerce in January 1847. However, he refused re-election after his 16-year membership and left office in June 1847 and left the chamber.

After his partner Rurmann died, Meckel transferred his company to his sons in 1849, since then it has operated under the name of Meckel & Co.

Caspar Wilhelm Meckel died of a stroke in 1852 at the age of 62 .
