Life

As the son of the businessman Johannes Simons (1771–1817), Friedrich Wilhelm Simons joined the company founded by his grandfather in 1828, the well-known silk weaving mill Johann Simons Erben . In the same year on September 17th, he married the daughter of the factory owner Ludwig Ferdinand Köhler, Emilia Köhler (* 1807 in Elberfeld) and took the name Simons-Köhler. Ludwig Ferdinand was a partner in the Bockmühl brothers' tape factory .

Friedrich Wilhelm Simons-Köhler became a deputy member of the board of directors of the Vaterländische Feuerversicherung-Gesellschaft in 1830 and three years later a full member . At first he devoted his time to business, later he expanded his commitment to the common good. From March 1837 to February 1841 and June 1847 to January 1849 he was a deputy member of the Chamber of Commerce of Elberfeld and Barmen (predecessor of today's Chamber of Commerce and Industry Wuppertal-Solingen-Remscheid ). When he became a full member in October 1849, he was elected to the office of President of the Chamber of Commerce with eleven out of twelve votes .

From 1842 Simons-Köhler was on the city council of Elberfeld and devoted himself in particular to poor relief. During the Elberfeld May Uprising in 1849, he was a member of a delegation which, at the request of the vigilantes, presented the situation of the city and its political position to the governments in Düsseldorf and Berlin in order to obtain an amnesty.

Friedrich Wilhelm Simons-Köhler died at the age of almost 54 after a short illness.
