Philipp Barthels

Philipp Barthels (born November 24, 1838 in Barmen ; † August 9, 1906 ibid) was a German textile manufacturer and 1893-1906 President of the Barmen Chamber of Commerce .

Life

The father of Philipp Bartels, Philipp Barthels sen. (1794–1874), came to Barmen from Krefeld at the beginning of the 19th century . In 1829 he founded the Barthels-Feldhoff company , a factory for cotton knitting and sewing threads. Barthels joined his father's company in 1862 as a partner, and in 1877 he became the sole owner.

Barthels devoted himself to poor relief in Barmen and became deputy chairman of the poor administration. Later he was a member of the city council and from 1894 to 1906 a member of the provincial parliament of the Rhine Province as a member for Barmen . In 1871 he was elected to the newly established Chamber of Commerce in Barmen as a representative of knitting, sewing and iron thread production . His father was a member of the Elberfeld and Barmen Chamber of Commerce from 1833 to 1848. Barthels was elected Deputy Chairman in 1884 and President of the Chamber in 1893 ; an office that he held until his death.

In the function of the President of the Chamber of Commerce, he was a member of the District Railway Council and the committee of the German Trade Convention , which elected him to the board in 1906. Barthels founded the association for the promotion of the textile industry. In 1900 he participated in the establishment of a textile school, later the textile engineering school, to whose board of trustees he was elected.

In 1894, Barthels had a villa built by the architect Ottomar Stein from Bad Honnef on the southern bank of the Rhine in Königswinter (later the Adam Stegerwald House ). He supported the construction of the Barmer Hall of Fame by making large donations.

Barthels married the merchant's daughter Bertha Lange (1843–?) On April 16, 1863, and the marriage resulted in a son and a daughter.
