The Y6 generation vehicles are rail buses that were commissioned by the engineering office of the Swedish railroad company SJ in the late 1940s . The reason for the construction of the new generation was the very maintenance-intensive vehicles made by Hilding Carlssons Mekaniska Verkstad from 1930 to 1940. These still consisted of a sheet-metal paneled wooden structure.

history

First, SJ ordered a small series of narrow-gauge vehicles from Märstaverken , which were put into service in 1949 as YCo4p and YCo4t. After good experience, standard gauge vehicles were also built. The series included several diesel and electric vehicles as well as various types of control and sidecar.

After completing the construction work, SJ obtained offers from various manufacturers for the construction, including again from Hilding Carlsson. The vehicles of the Y6 generation were then built by ASJ, Hägglund & Söner, Kalmar Verkstad and Märstaverken (Eksjöverken). In 1950 the first 40 standard gauge railcars and 35 control and trailer cars were ordered from Hägglund & Söner in Örnsköldsvik .

The first railcars were delivered in 1953 with the series designation YCo6 (later Y6) for the route Boden - Haparanda . In order to put together longer trains, the railcars were equipped with transition bridges. So up to eight railcars could be driven in one unit. They got the characteristic color scheme with a black frame, orange underside, yellow top and gray roof.

From the late 1950s onwards, the vehicles took over almost all passenger traffic, especially on the branch lines , until they were replaced by the new Y1 multiple unit in the 1980s . Since there was also an electric version of the railcar that could be combined with the diesel trains, the trains could be used on both local and long-distance routes. Especially for the operation on long-distance routes, the vehicles were partly equipped with more comfortable seats, they were even used on the entire route of the domestic railway . After the retirement from passenger transport in the 1990s, however, the history of vehicles did not end. Many were handed over to Banavdelningen - later Banverket - in order to continue to be used as railway service cars: they continued to be used as inspection vehicles, staff trains, for transporting tools and as storage and station cars . In recent years, however, these have also been replaced by more modern vehicles.

With a total of 373 diesel multiple units, 30 electric multiple units and 321 control and trailer cars, the Y6 generation was the largest Swedish series acquisition of rail vehicles for passenger transport in Sweden to date. In addition, Hilding Carlsson supplied a number of narrow-gauge rail vehicles of a similar design, the YP .

In addition to the SJ, the private Säröbanan (Göteborg-Särö Järnväg (GSJ)) acquired five railcars and three Y6-type trailers in blue and beige-yellow in 1954. The trains were used across the country, were inexpensive to operate, and delayed the cessation of passenger services on many routes.

Diesel railcars

Y6

The first variant of the railcar series was the Y6. The deliveries took place between 1953 and 1957 and comprised 251 cars. Since the 3rd class still existed at the time of the first deliveries in Sweden, the vehicles were called YCo6. From 1956 the series designation was then YBo6 and from the deliveries in 1970 the series was called Y6. The Y6 has 53 seats of a simpler design, five seats in each row in a 3 + 2 arrangement. The cars were built by Hägglunds, ASJ in Linköping and Kalmar Verkstad (20 pieces with the numbers 852 to 871). The last car of this model was taken out of planned operation in 1983. Many vehicles were converted into railroad service vehicles. 26 railcars were sold to various Danish private railways.

From the Y6 series, vehicles 773, 859 and 1116 have been preserved from Svenska Motorvagnsklubben , number 1062 from the Östra Skånes Järnvägar Museum Association , number 1130 from Inlandsbanan AB, no.1109 in Sveriges Järnvägsmuseum , and from Nora Bergslags Veteran Jernväg NBVJ No. 1037. No. 1037 came back from a Danish private railway, is painted completely red and is called dansken , "the Dane".

Y7

The Y6 was followed by the Y7, which was originally referred to as the YBo7. In 1970 he got the series designation Y7. The Y7 series had only 47 improved seats with the arrangement 2 + 2 per row. This variant was a modification of the X16, which was built in this form and with which one had had good experiences. Between 1957 and 1960 the vehicles were built by ASJ in Linköping and by the Eksjöverken in Eksjö. Together with the seven vehicles converted from Y6 and Y8, 129 units were produced. The Y7 1224 car was tested in the same color that was later given to the X9 class railcars . Several railcars from this series were converted into rail service vehicles.

Five railcars were sold as BM 89 to the Norges Statsbaner and one to a Danish private railway. The trains were used by the SJ until 1989. Some trains have been preserved, including the Y7 1177 at Svenska Motorvagnsklubben , the Y7 1063, 1220 and 1242 from the NBVJ in Nora and the Y7 1086 and 1233 from Inlandsbanan AB .

Y8

In the mid-1960s, the demand for rail vehicles for high-speed railcar traffic in central Sweden increased. Therefore, 29 YBo6 were converted from the SJ to increase the comfort for the travelers. This conversion took place between 1963 and 1965. The same type of seats were used on these trains as in the X9. The number of seats was reduced from 53 to 36. The interior was redesigned, especially the tubular steel hat racks. The driver's cab was repainted in gray instead of the previously used green. Initially, the designation YBo8 was used for the vehicles, then Y8 from 1970. The trains were then mainly used on longer routes. On the Norrlandsbanorna and Inlandsbanan, among others, the rail buses were the most widely used vehicles. In the early 1980s, the new Italian Y1s increasingly displaced the Y8 from the routes in northern Sweden. These were relocated to Kristianstad and Malmö . On the Blekinge Kustbana, they replaced the classic rolling stock on the 298 and 299 express trains.

Several vehicles have been preserved at museum railways. The Museiföreningen Östra Skånes Järnvägar mfÖSJ in Kristianstad owns No. 1064, which was restored to its original condition after its service as a railway company car. The municipality of Karlskoga has taken over No. 1076, Orsa Järnvägsförening No. 1124, NBVJ 1125, Svenska Motorvagnsklubben No. 1131 and Dellenbanans Vänner Association No. 1132.

Y8 1135 is employed by Örnsköldsviks Järnvägssällskap , it belongs to Ostkustbanans Vänner . The rail bus is used on the Stambanan , it also runs on the Botniabanan , for which it is rented from Banverket , today's Infranord .

YS

Inspection railcar for the superstructure department. The YBo6 1022 built in 1964 was given the new series designation YSo6 for use in southern Sweden and the YBo7 1171 and 1179 built in 1967 were prepared for use in the north according to the same principle. During the renovation, the entire interior and the partition walls were removed. A new boiler was installed and a small kitchenette was built into the B-compartment. The new interior consisted of a conference table with ten seats in the B-compartment as well as six converted chairs from Ao14 sidecars and two small tables in the A-compartment. The compartments are divided by a folding wall, the former passenger compartment has been fitted with a carpet. The series designation was changed to YS in 1970, but as early as 1972 all company cars were redrawn as Qgm . The new numbers were Qgm 0037, 0038 and 0039. Qgm 0037 was rebuilt in 1975 with a hoist for work on the overhead line and was given the designation Qgz-yä and the number 985 0842. Qgm 0038 became PMV 0038 in 1994 and in the early years In the 2000s it was handed over to Svenska Motorvagnsklubben , which restored the previous YS version.

Control and sidecar

14 different types of control cars and sidecars have been developed to assemble trains with the multiple unit series Y6 / Y7 / Y8 / YS / X16 / X17. Most of the 321 cars built in total had the same appearance as the railcars with two bogies. With a few exceptions, the steering position was to be found at one end of the control car , as was the compartment for luggage and general cargo . In addition, the vehicles were provided with open transition devices with scissor bars, mainly so that the staff could walk the entire train to the ticket control.

UAFY

Control car with 1st class seats and a luggage compartment. Control stand only at one end of the car.

UAFZ

Control car with 1st class seats and a luggage compartment. Like UAFY, but adapted for use with the X16 / X17 electric multiple units. There is also a switch between diesel and electric operation and a control button for the pantograph. UAFZ 1983 is available as a museum vehicle at Östra Skånes Järnvägar in Kristianstad. UAFZ 2087 was built in 1960 as one of the last series of four at NBVJ in Nora.

UABFY

Control car with ten seats in 1st and 15 seats in 2nd class as well as a luggage compartment. Control stand only at one end of the car.

UB

Sidecar with seats. 15 cars were delivered as type UCo6 - these had the numbers 1944–1958. These had 62 seats in 3rd class. The facility was similar to the YCo6 / YBo6 / Y6 multiple units, but with six additional seats at each end instead of the driver's cab and engine compartment. These cars were made by AB Eksjöverken . In 1956, the series designation was changed to UBo6 and in 1970 to UB with the abolition of the 3rd class. Their curb weight was 14 tons, they could reach the maximum speed of 115 km / h with the railcars. At first, the sidecar was based in Halmstad for use on routes to Nässjö and Falköping . The UB 1957 car is in the care of the Svenska Motorvagnsklubben .

The maximum load for freight was six tons, the mail compartment had a floor space of 15 square meters. The car no. 2004 was located in Denmark for a long time, and since the late 1980s it has been received by the Svenska Motorvagnsklubben .

UDF20

Sidecar for mail and luggage only.

UF

Sidecar only for general cargo.

UFV

Sidecar for general cargo. The car has two axles and is therefore shorter than the other sidecars. Because of its short and chubby shape, the UFV was also called " Ostar " (= cheese).

50 cars were delivered as UF6 with the numbers 2025 to 2054 and 2140 to 2159 by AB Eksjöverken. In 1970 the series was renamed UFV. The curb weight was eight tons, the maximum load five tons and the space for the load was 20 m². Some sidecars have been preserved, such as number 2041 of Östra Skånes Järnvägar and number 2054 of Svenska Motorvagnsklubben .
