Hilding Carlssons Mekaniska Verkstad was a rail vehicle manufacturer in Sweden . The company mainly built railcars and rail buses .
history
The vehicle factory founded by Hilding Carlsson in 1913 was based at Pilgatan 16 in Umeå . The first vehicles were draisines . From 1932, production was shifted to rail buses, with which the company quickly became known. In the 1930s and 1940s, the vehicles called Umeå-bussen in Sweden were produced in large numbers . It was a railcar that consisted of a sheet metal-clad wooden structure.
In the 1950s, there was a transition to a more modern shape in which the corners were rounded. This model is made entirely of metal. The company's main customer, Statens Järnvägar (SJ), did not want to adopt this model and developed the Y6 generation itself . Here again Hilding Carlsson produced the narrow-gauge model YP derived from it . These were originally colored like the wooden rail buses in pale gold with a green border, later they were given the well-known gold-orange paint.
The last type of railcar was built from 1959 to 1963. The Yoa2 was known as Paprikatåg ( German paprika train ) because of its original color. After Hilding Carlsson's death in 1961, rail vehicle construction ended. The company was acquired by a competing truck trailer manufacturer and the factory in Umeå was closed. Many Hilding Carlsson vehicles are still in use on various museum railways in Sweden.

The series designation corresponds to the last numbering plan from SJ. Most of the narrow-gauge vehicles were taken over by private railways.
