The Swedish diesel railcars of the YP series were narrow-gauge railcars for passenger traffic on the narrow-gauge line network of Statens Järnvägar (SJ).

history

During the 1940s, the SJ looked for ways of replacing trains pulled by steam locomotives on normal and narrow-gauge railways on the non-electrified routes. Until 1950, Hilding Carlssons Mekaniska Verkstad was the leading supplier of a wide range of railcars. However , the SJ switched to other providers for the Y6 series standard-gauge railcars acquired from the 1950s , and orders for the narrow-gauge vehicles went back to Hilding Carlsson.

The first rail buses of the series with a track width of 891 mm were delivered in 1952. Since the 3rd class still existed in Sweden at that time, the series designations YCo5p (railcar with passenger compartment), YFo5p (railcar only with cargo compartment ), UCFo3yp ( control car with passenger and cargo compartment), UDFo13p ( sidecar for post office) and UFo1p were used (Sidecar for general cargo) used. Railcar trains with a maximum of six units could be formed. In 1956, after the 3rd class was abolished, the code letter for the car class changed from C to B. The designations of the control cars were also changed: UBo3yp was valid for the control car with only a passenger compartment and UBFo4yp was the control car with a passenger and cargo area. After the Swedish numbering scheme was changed in 1970, the railcars were given the designation YP and the associated control cars UBYP and UBFYP .

For this purpose, four freight railcars with the designation YFo5p were built, which were used for the fast transport of general cargo in Västergötland and Östergötland . One of them is preserved on the Upsala – Lenna Jernväg museum railway .

Hilding Carlsson created his own design for the narrow-gauge railcars, whereby they looked very similar to the standard-gauge series Y6. In contrast to the Y6 vehicles, the radiators were attached to the front and instead of a bogie with a motor and a running bogie, the YP got two bogies, each with a driven axle and a running axle .

At the beginning, the multiple units had a color scheme in yellow and white with green decor. When the Y6 rail buses were delivered, the new yellow and orange color scheme was used. In addition, the YP rail buses received destination displays on both sides.

By 1958, a total of 72 passenger railcars, four general cargo railcars and 75 control and trailer cars of various types were delivered.

Track width 1067 mm

In the 1960s, six rail buses and five sidecars for 1067 mm gauge were built for use in Blekinge and Småland . These were retired as early as 1970, when the last passenger train of this gauge was running.

End of regular use

Also in 1970 the passenger traffic on the Västgötabanan (Göteborg – Skara) was stopped. The railcars only remained in use on Roslagsbanan and between Växjö and Västervik.

The use of the YP on the Roslagsbanan ended in the early 1980s, in 1984 passenger traffic on the Västervik – Växjö line was discontinued. The vehicles that were still in existence were then used on various museum railways. Most of them were taken over by Västervik-Hultsfred-Växjö Järnväg (VHVJ), which ran the museum on the Västerviksbanan. After a few years, the VHVJ became insolvent and the vehicles were distributed to other railways. Today the YP wagons can be seen in vehicle museums and on the Uppsala - Länna and Hultsfred - Västervik museum railways . A total of around fifteen vehicles have been preserved.
