The railway line Stockholm – Sundsvall (also Ostkustbanan , German  East Coast Railway ) is an electrified railway line in Sweden .

The name Ostkustbanan for the entire route has only existed since 1990, when Banverket renamed the Swedish routes regardless of the history. Historically, the route Gävle - Sundsvall - Härnösand is the Ostkustbanan .

history

The line between Stockholm and northern Sweden was built inland between 1866 and 1894. The reason for not running the route directly along the coast were partly military reasons as well as the fact that the coastal region was opened up by steamships at that time . The coastal cities such as Gävle and Sundsvall were connected to the main line by connecting railways.

The Stockholm – Uppsala route was part of the old Norra stambanan . It was soon recognized that the railroad was superior to the steamship. In 1874 the Uppsala – Gävle railway was built with private capital.

The historically called Ostkustbanan (OKB) route Gävle – Sundsvall – Härnösand was built between 1921 and 1927 as a private railway.

The electrification of the seven-kilometer-long section Stockholm - Järfva (today Ulriksdal ) took place in 1906 as a single-phase alternating current test operation with voltages between 5000 and 22,000 volts and a frequency of 25 Hertz under the direction of Robert Dahlander . For this purpose, the German Siemens-Schuckert-Werke and Westinghouse Electric , the latter in cooperation with the American Baldwin Locomotive Works , provided one electric locomotive each, while AEG provided the electrical equipment for two "motor vehicles" and two sidecars. The tests were part of a feasibility study for the electrification of the SJ's rail network. Detailed investigations of all components of the vehicles and the energy supply as well as the costs led to the conclusion that in the near future single-phase alternating current will prevail for electric rail operations. In 1907 the electrical operation was stopped again. The continuous electrification of the entire route took place in 1934 with single-phase alternating current 15 kV 16 ⅔ Hz .

In 1997 a parallel line with a train station was opened under Stockholm / Arlanda Airport . In 1997/1999 an approximately 50 km long high- speed section between Ljusne and Enånger was put into operation for a maximum speed of 200 km / h and the original route through the town of Söderhamn was discontinued. The Uppsala –Gävle section has been double-tracked since the 1990s. With the opening of the second track through the newly built tunnel at Gamla Uppsala on September 17, 2017, the double-track expansion was completed.

traffic

Statens Järnvägar (SJ AB) express trains run between Stockholm, Sundsvall and Umeå . SJ also operates the Linköping –Gävle and Stockholm – Uppsala regional traffic . In addition, private companies operate trains between Stockholm and Uppsala ( Pendeltåg ), Uppsala and Gävle ( Upptåget ) and Gävle and Sundsvall ( X-tåget ) on behalf of the respective Landstinge .

future

In October 2013, Trafikverket proposed that maintenance of the branch line between Hamrångefjärden and Norrsundet be stopped. If the authorities surveyed agree, the route will continue to exist for three years without maintenance and without being allowed to be driven. After these three years, if there is no longer any need for the section, the line will be closed for good.

On September 17, 2017, the second track was put into operation on the approximately four-kilometer section between Samnan and Löten. In the area of the church of Gamla Uppsala a 610 meter long tunnel was built, which reduces the noise in the culturally and historically sensitive area. The construction time for the entire project was over four years, including around three years for the construction of the new line. The time and cost plan of 1.3 billion Swedish kronor (price level 2012) were adhered to. Four level crossings were removed, which improved accessibility and safety in the region. The new section means that 24 instead of the previous 8 trains can now travel the section per hour.
