The Mora Strand – Uppsala railway is a single-track, 265-kilometer, standard-gauge, electrified railway line in Sweden . It leads from Mora to Uppsala and crosses Dalarnas län , Uppsala län and Västmanlands län .
The route has been known as Dalabanan since it was named by Banverket in 1990 . This is an art term that was coined under other names long after the individual sections of the route were built. The reason for the designation was, among other things, the traffic service with continuous trains over these route sections.
history
The route known today as Dalabanan was originally built by various private railway companies and Statens Järnvägar . The detailed history of the route sections can be found in the respective articles. So is:
- the Morastrand – Mora section of the Inlandsbanan ,
- the Mora – Utby section of the Orsa – Falun railway line built by Falun – Rättvik – Mora Järnvägsaktiebolag ,
- the Utby – Borlänge section of the Rättvik – Borlänge railway line built by Siljans Järnvägsaktiebolag and expanded by Södra Dalarnes Järnvägsaktiebolag (SDJ) ,
- the Borlänge – Avesta Krylbo section of the Södra Dalarnes Järnväg ,
- the section Avesta Krylbo – Uppsala part of the original Norra stambanan .
traffic
Passenger traffic on the route is operated by SJ AB (SJ) and since June 2006 by Tågkompaniet (since April 24, 2019 Vy Tåg ) on behalf of Tåg i Bergslagen . The contract with Tåg i Bergslagen runs until 2016. Tågkompaniet runs the entire route on the Mora – Borlänge, SJ section.
SJ uses new Regina Intercity (X55) , which are marketed as SJ 3000.
With the timetable change on December 9, 2012, the regional traffic previously operated by SJ on the Uppsala – Sala section was taken over by Upplands Lokaltrafik . Since then, twelve pairs of Upptåget trains have been running on weekdays and six on weekends, with stops in Morgongåva and Heby .
future
Studies by Trafikverket have shown that the Uppsala – Sala and Sala – Borlänge sections can be improved with new or restored stations. Changes to the curve radii and some shorter realignments were also proposed, but these are not feasible or affordable in the local area.
The feasibility study of the route was intended to examine shorter travel times and the possibility of increased train operation. Between Uppsala and Sala this can be done using sidings in the stations Klista, Åland, Vittinge and Heby. The tracks in the existing overtaking stations could be extended between Sala and Borlänge, so that trains that meet each other can pass through without stopping during normal operation. These measures could be implemented in the short term.
In order to increase the speed, the curve radii would have to be increased and shorter realignments would have to be made. To the south of Hedemora, a section of the line would have to be doubled. These measures require further research, also with regard to profitability.
Trafikverket decided to carry out feasibility studies on the proposals. In the next four to five years, the measures will be included in the regional plan and in the national plan for planning and priority setting. There is currently no other planning or financing option.
