The Ludvika – Falun railway is a standard-gauge Swedish railway line . It is part of the historical and also the so-called Bergslagsbanan today .
history
The railway line from Ludvika to Falun is the northernmost part of the main line of the former Järnvägar (BJ) mountain camps . The entire line ran from Gothenburg to Falun. Traffic on the Ludvika – Falun section was started on December 31, 1875 as the first section of the BJ, and the entire line was in operation four years later. This section is the direct continuation of the section between Ställdalen and Ludvika , the former main line of Frövi – Ludvika Järnväg (FLJ). There the two railway companies BJ and FLJ operated competing operations on parallel routes for years.
In 1908, the BJ became the majority shareholder in Gävle – Dala – Järnväg and together with it and other companies formed the Göteborg – Dalarne – Gävle Transport Authority (GDG), in which BJ and GDG were the most important partners. The GDG was nationalized in 1947 and later integrated into the SJ . The line was electrified in 1946.
Rämshyttan – Idkerberget railway line
The ten kilometer long railway line from Rämshyttan to Idkerberget was opened on October 1, 1912 by the BJ for freight traffic.
The Idkerberget ore mine was established in the early 1900s. In 1908 the production of iron ore was between 50,000 and 100,000 tons. Some of this ore was processed in the Rämshyttan smelter acquired in 1904 from the Grufaktiebolaget Dalarna founded in 1901 . Another part of this ore was brought to Ulfshyttan on a nine-kilometer cable car from 1902 to 1912 . The ore mine became known in Sweden when on March 16, 1961, a large land collapse occurred in which several cars and a garage sank. No one was injured, but 70 people had to be evacuated. The pit was closed on February 28, 1977. This eliminated the transport tasks on the route, which resulted in the provisional suspension on May 23, 1977. The final shutdown took place on April 1, 1983.
