The Enköping – Runhällen railway was a standard gauge railway in the Swedish province of Uppsala län and the historic province of Uppland . It led from Enköping via Heby to Runhällen .

history

On November 6, 1897, the concession for the railway line was granted and the Enköping – Heby – Runhällens Järnvägs AB (EHRJ) was formed at a constituent general meeting in the town hall of Enköping.

Enköping – Heby – Runhällens Järnvägs AB

Different views on the necessity of the route delayed construction. Work on the line did not begin until 1904. It was completed and opened to traffic on January 5, 1906. The line was inaugurated on November 17, 1906 by Crown Prince Gustav , who later became King Gustav V. On December 12th, 1906, passenger and goods traffic on the port railway in Enköping started.

The biggest customers on the route were the brickworks in Hårsbäcks and the agricultural trade in Fjärdhundra, which loaded grain.

From the train station of Stockholm-Vasteras-Bergslagens Järnvägar (SWB) in Enköping the route over Vårfru, Sparrsätra, Skensta, Frösthult, Fjärdhundra, Revelsta, Altuna, Hårsbäck, Hällstigen, Heby, Arnebo and Översävne led by Runhällen to the local train station in 1901 opened railway line Sala-Gävle (SGGJ). A locomotive shed for two locomotives, a turntable and a coal and water supply were built in Runhallen. The SGGJ operated the traffic service in Runhallen.

For the approximately 49 km long route, the EHRJ procured three steam locomotives of the EHRJ 1–3 series from Nydqvist och Holm AB in Trollhättan .

Takeover by Stockholm – Västerås – Bergslagens Järnvägar

The problems with the track started soon after the inauguration, it was never a success. There were no more than five trains a day in each direction. The EHRJ board quickly realized that the income was insufficient. At an extraordinary general meeting in December 1907 it was discussed whether Stockholm – Västerås – Bergslagens Järnvägar would take over the company. EHRJ was bought by SWB on October 1, 1908, and EHRJ went into liquidation on February 6, 1909.

Operation and further development

After SWB took over the route, passenger traffic on the port railway in Enköping was discontinued on May 1, 1909.

Takeover by Statens Järnvägar and shutdown

Stockholm – Västerås – Bergslagens Järnvägar (SWB) was taken over by Statens Järnvägar as part of the general nationalization of the railways in Sweden in 1944 .

Traffic on the Heby – Runhällen section was stopped on April 1, 1952. This was followed by the closure of all traffic on the Enköping – Fjärdhundra section and the cessation of passenger traffic on the Heby – Fjärdhundra section on October 1, 1959. The abandonment of freight traffic and thus the complete cessation of the Heby – Fjärdhundra section took place on October 1, 1968 The last section of the former EHRJ was the Enköping – Enköpings hamn port railway, which was in operation until January 1, 1977.
