At times he was the editor responsible for the politics / economics department of Informer at Presse-Verlag Ruhr GmbH. From 2017 to 2018 he was the Federal Press Spokesman for the Pirate Party of Germany. Under the label [recherche | kollektiv] - Investigative Research in Journalism, he works as a freelance editor and columnist nationwide for various national and regional media and publishers. He is also the publisher and managing director of the digital publishing house Westfalen-Ruhr and the publisher of the digital newspaper Ruhr. Hesse is state treasurer in the German Association of Journalists (DJV) NRW, member of the administrative board of the collecting society Wort (VG Wort), member of the Senate of the FernUniversität in Hagen , honorary judge at the Administrative Court of Gelsenkirchen and vice-president of the German-Afghan Society (DAGeV). Before that, he was (2014 to 2018) an honorary judge at the Essen Regional Court as well as a member of the 14th Federal Executive Board (2013 to 2014) of Campusgrün , the university organization and federal association of alternative green university groups in Germany, which is related to the party BÜNDNIS 90 / DIE GRÜNEN . Today, Hesse is considered non-party.

Life

education

Hesse attended the private Catholic Don Bosco grammar school in Essen . He studied political science at the University of Duisburg-Essen . His studies of law and cultural studies at the Distance University in Hagen are still ongoing. Hesse received his journalistic training as an editor at the Journalist Center Haus Busch and the Neue Rhein / Neuen Ruhr Zeitung (NRZ).

job

After working for various local and regional media in the Rhine-Ruhr area, including the Neue Ruhr Zeitung , the Westdeutsche Allgemeine Zeitung and the Borbecker Nachrichten of the Funke media group , he began working as an editor for politics and economics at the Essen local magazine Informer Magazine in 2014 . He is also the managing editor of [recherche | collective] Investigative research in journalism .

Hesse has been a member of the North Rhine-Westphalia state board of the German Association of Journalists since April 2015 , after the managing director affair of the DJV NRW, which he also uncovered, as state treasurer since May 2017. Since 2010, Pascal Hesse has also been the chairman of the German Association of Journalists for the Essen-Mülheim-Oberhausen district. He is the youngest journalist nationwide to hold such a position.

For professional group II - journalists, authors and translators of non-fiction literature - Hesse is a member of the administrative board of the collecting society Wort (VG Wort).

From February to December 2017 he was the Federal Press Spokesman for the Pirate Party of Germany. In April 2017, prmagazin , a monthly trade magazine for the media industry aimed at journalists , public relations agencies and press officers , named Hesse and its press office the winner of the federal parties' press office test. With 177.5 out of a possible 200 points, Hesse took the overall victory (grade “very good”). The press spokesman, who also worked as an investigative journalist and who became known in 2016 with his research on the administration and falsified vita of the SPD member of the Bundestag at the time, Petra Hinz, answered the test questions on the subject of fake news completely.

Investigative research

As an investigative journalist, in 2014 Hesse did not want to miss the opportunity to report on the mayor candidate of the Essen SPD, which is important for the city of Essen and the entire Ruhr area. Incumbent Reinhard Pass competed against the mayor of Rheine, Angelika Kordfelder . Since the press was not allowed to attend the public event and - as is typical for the Ruhr area - wanted to meet behind closed doors, Hesse applied for membership in the SPD without further ado. However, this was denied him by the SPD chairman and Minister of Justice of North Rhine-Westphalia, Thomas Kutschaty . An objection he directed to NRW party leader and Prime Minister Hannelore Kraft was also rejected. There was extensive coverage of this in the Ruhr area. The Ruhrbarone portal wrote : "Kulturbruch: Professional interest is no longer enough for SPD entry."

Together with the editorial team of Informer Magazine , Hesse reported in 2016 on the dubious real estate business of the Essen councilor Arndt Gabriel. He had earned millions by buying a cheap property with his company in the midst of the refugee crisis and renting it to the city of Essen for millions. He was involved in some decisions in the city council and did not declare himself biased. Hesse discovered that. Numerous media, including the non-profit research network Correctiv , took up Hesse's research.

His reports, published in Informer Magazine , on anonymous allegations of insults, bullying and gross violations by the SPD member of the Bundestag at the time, Petra Hinz, while running her parliamentary office, as well as his research and press inquiries that led to the uncovering of the falsified vita of the members, made Hesse known in 2016. Hesse revealed that the MP had made up her high school diploma, her law degree, two state exams and her professional activities as a lawyer and attorney. Because of this, she resigned a little later from her mandate as a member of the German Bundestag , all public offices and those within the SPD. After this revelation, Hesse also revealed that the potential successor of Petra Hinz, Stephan Leifeld, is said to have submitted a potentially ambiguous résumé. Even before the reporting, Leifeld had withdrawn his application for the Bundestag candidacy.

Together with Katrin Kroemer , federal treasurer of the German Association of Journalists (DJV) and editor-in-chief of TOP Magazin Ruhr, Hesse uncovered a suspected case of fraud and embezzlement in his own union in April 2017. As the media service kress.de reports, the managing director is said to have cheated the DJV Landesverband NRW by a five-digit amount. As the Rheinische Post writes, he is said to have issued fake invoices from lawyers and consulting firms himself and stole around 50,000 euros. Due to the research, the association separated from its managing director and initiated legal steps.

Awards

In the summer of 2016, Pascal Hesse received the research grant “Discover your Münsterland”, endowed with 800 euros and several workshops on the journalistic forms of representation reportage, portrait and storytelling, a young talent grant that was awarded by the Münsterland Association as part of the Münsterland Journalist Prize . V., the Press Association Münster-Münsterland e. V. in the German Association of Journalists and the Sparkasse Münsterland Ost .

Political commitment

In 2009, Pascal Hesse ran in the local elections for the Bündnis 90 / Die Grünen party as a direct candidate in Essen-Bergeborbeck and placed 9th on his party's council reserve list. At that time he was a member of the district executive of the Essen Greens, was a state and federal delegate of his party and also a member of the presidium of the grassroots council of the Green Youth in North Rhine-Westphalia.

Hesse is the chairman of the Green University Group Association at the FernUniversität in Hagen . As Political Director, he was also a member of the 14th Federal Board of Campusgrün - Federal Association of Green-Alternative University Groups - from 2013 to 2014 .

For several years, Pascal Hesse was a joint candidate of the Greens, the Pirate Party and the Left in the academic senate of the distance university in Hagen . Hesse sued against the basic fee at the FernUniversität in Hagen, which was decided by the Senate in 2013 and introduced in 2014. After the administrative court in Arnsberg had initially upheld its claim, the basic fee, a tuition fee, was abolished again. The Higher Administrative Court of North Rhine-Westphalia in Münster confirmed this decision on March 28, 2017.

Pascal Hesse was a member of the board of directors of the Institute for History and Biography "German Memory" founded by Alexander von Plato and based in Hagen. He is also one of the founding members of the Solidarity Modern Institute (ISM).
