history

Borbecker Nachrichten (BN for short) was founded in 1949. Your publisher Wilhelm Wimmer worked as an editor for Borbecker Lokal-Anzeiger in the 1920s . The Borbecker Nachrichten initially appeared as a "bulletin for the Borbeck Citizens and Tourist Association". That way it didn't need a license from the UK licensing authority. After the editor's early death, his sons Walter and Franz-Josef continued to run the weekly newspaper in 1953, following the English model as a local weekly newspaper. In 1959, the two also bought in Essen's are appearing BECOMING messages .

Despite the local competition of the Westdeutsche Allgemeine Zeitung (WAZ), the BN developed into the local weekly newspaper with the highest circulation in Germany at times. At the beginning of 1998 the paper had a sold circulation of 15,210 copies. Across all party lines, Walter Wimmer became the Borbeck personality who was asked for advice in the event of a communal conflict. During his time as editor and publisher, Walter Wimmer was always committed to the interests of the Essen district and never shied away from naming grievances. Adaptation to the authorities was alien to him. He has always followed the concerns of socially disadvantaged people.

The journalistic success aroused the interest of the WAZ media group . After the publisher had acquired Franz-Josef Wimmers' shares in Borbecker Nachrichten in 1986, it intensified competition in the late 1990s by founding local editions of the Westdeutsche Allgemeine Zeitung and an advertising paper in order to be able to completely take over the two newspapers Borbecker Nachrichten and Werdener Nachrichten. In 2000 Walter Wimmer gave in and sold both newspapers to the WAZ. This supposedly happened for reasons of age, but Wimmer had previously been worn down by the WAZ through its aggressive expansion policy: He described the behavior of the buyers in the weekly newspaper Die Zeit as sheer violence .

The last issue of Borbecker Nachrichten was published on August 31, 2018.
