The weekly newspaper Werdener Nachrichten from the Essen district of Werden was founded in 1850. It sees itself as the oldest newspaper in the Ruhr area . The Werdener Nachrichten is one of the rare examples of a local weekly newspaper that is not distributed as a free advertising paper , but sold. The sold circulation is 2091 copies, a decrease of 62.9 percent since 1998. The paper belongs to the Funke media group .

history

The Werdener Nachrichten was founded in 1850 by the Holstein printer Wilhelm Flügge as the Werdener-Kettwiger Wochenblatt and renamed in 1851 as the non-profit weekly newspaper and the General Gazette for Werden and Kettwig . After an intermediate step as the Neue Ruhr-Zeitung , the paper was called Werdener Zeitung from 1871 to 1938 . After Flügge Senior's death in 1893, Wilhelm Flügge Junior took over as owner. The newspaper, which initially appeared twice a week, brought news from all over the world, entertainment and, above all, advertisements, but only little of the local area. The paper has appeared every day except Sundays since the late 1920s at the latest. In 1938 the newspaper was taken over by another publisher and discontinued in 1941. This attitude, justified by the war economy, took place in favor of the Werdener Allgemeine Zeitung , a side edition of the National Socialist Essener Allgemeine Zeitung from the Essen publishing house .

After the newspaper was banned by National Socialism , which was also upheld by the British occupation authorities , Ernst Möller founded the Werdener advertising paper for town and country in the summer of 1948 , a weekly newspaper typical of the time for the publication of official local announcements and advertisements . From October 8th, the newspaper was called Werdener Nachrichten für Stadt und Land .

By the BECOMING messages either through a common Verlag (publisher Ernst Moller instead Wilhelm Flügge), common content (local instead Supraregional), the same publication (weekly daily) or the same name ( BECOMING messages instead BECOMING newspaper ) predecessor sheet established a relationship with the 1850 is proven, the Werdener Nachrichten can not look back on a real tradition of more than 150 years, but it is a so-called (but common in newspapers) "false tradition". However, the newspaper has the archive of all previous newspapers dating back around 150 years. This at least suggests a continuous and binding handover.

In 1959 the newspaper was sold to the brothers Walter and Franz-Josef Wimmer, who were already publishing the Borbecker Nachrichten in the Borbeck district of Essen .

In 2000 the owner Walter Wimmer sold the newspaper to the WAZ media group . Although this was done for reasons of age, Wimmer had previously been worn down by the WAZ through an aggressive expansion policy: After the publisher had already acquired part of the shares in Werdener Nachrichten in the mid-1980s , it intensified competition by founding at the end of the 1990s Local editions of the Westdeutsche Allgemeine Zeitung and a local advertising paper in order to be able to completely take over the two papers Borbecker Nachrichten and Werdener Nachrichten . Walter Wimmer described the behavior of the WAZ media group in the weekly newspaper Die Zeit as "sheer violence".
