history

As part of the Kraft durch Freude project , a residential and recreational facility for female workers in the largest ammunition factory of the German armaments company EIBIA with the code name “Karl” was built in 1938 . After the end of the war, the buildings were used by the British as accommodation for work companies and were given the name Helena-Lager. This camp housed mostly German prisoners of war until the end of the captivity of war in 1947, after which it was converted into the German Civil Labor Organization or German Service Organization and used for military training purposes until the early 1980s. The first peaceful use of the building began in 1984 based on the Scottish Findhorn community , two years later Lebensgarten Steyerberg e. V. founded. The building fabric in need of renovation was gradually rebuilt in an ecological way in the pioneering phase of the Lebensgarten. In 2000 the seminar house with two conference rooms and 17 guest beds was built from a hall.

Infrastructure

The members live in their own apartments or houses on the grounds of the Lebensgarten. In addition, several special-purpose operations were set up in the Lebensgarten : the seminar operation as the administration of the seminar house, an electric car sharing with its own PV system, the school for mediation , the Money Network Alliance MonNetA with the support of Margrit Kennedy and the permaculture park . Independent businesses: The Phönix book room; since 2003 an institution recognized by the youth welfare office, the Steyerberg Institute for Learning Therapy; aps advertising design and treatment rooms at the Kühnel & Partner occupational therapy practice . Four other registered associations have their seat in the garden of life: Choka Sangha , a Zen Buddhist group, operator of the permaculture park; the Steyerberg Center for Nonviolent Communication based on Marshall B. Rosenberg's concept ; since 2005 the association Mindfulness and Understanding .

everyday life

The garden of life sees itself as a place to encourage contact between residents and guests and with other people. Vegetables are grown in the residents' gardens and in the permaculture park. As a daily ritual, meditation, singing and circle dances are also offered to guests every morning.

decision making

The political structure of the village is based on grassroots democracy . Decisions are made according to the principle of consensus in monthly general meetings. The board consists of 6 to 8 people and represents the executive branch. Members can support the community at their own discretion and are on their own in their apartments.
