Vikarbyn is a place ( Tatort ) in the Swedish province of Dalarna County and in the historical province of Dalarna .
location
Vikarbyn belongs to the municipality of Rättvik . The place is about 50 km as the crow flies northwest of the provincial capital Falun and six kilometers northwest of the community center Rättvik on the north-eastern bank of Lake Siljan . Vikarbyn is the second largest town in the municipality after its central town Rättvik.
The national road 70, which begins in Enköping northwest of Stockholm , is the most important connection from this direction to the province of Dalarna and continues through Vikarbyn and continues to Idre and the Norwegian border at the level of the southern end of Lake Femund . The railway line from Uppsala to Mora ( Dalabanan , also called Siljansbanan on the Borlänge- Mora section ) runs through the town, but today no longer has a stopping point, so the nearest train station is in Rättvik.
history
The place was first mentioned in 1539 as Wijeken , corresponding to the later form Viken , 'bay' in relation to the location of the place on the small bay Åkernäsviken of Lake Siljan. In 1680, over 200 people lived in the village on 36 farms who made their living from agriculture and forestry.
After the opening of the Orsa – Falun railway line in 1891, the role of the timber industry grew and sawmills were built. In addition, due to the location of the place on Lake Siljan, tourism began to develop.
The last sawmill, last owned by Stora AB , closed in 1986; since then tourism has been the main economic factor.
